Martin Sherif Charged by FA Over Betting Breaches

Everton forward Martin Sherif has been charged by the Football Association over an alleged series of betting rule breaches spanning 15 months.

The 20-year-old is accused of placing 61 bets on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. He has been given until Monday, 17 August to respond to the charges.

In a brief statement, the FA confirmed the case: “Martin Sherif of Everton FC has been charged with breaching the FA’s betting rules. It’s alleged that the player breached FA Rule E1.2 in respect of 61 bets placed on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. Martin Sherif has until Monday 17 August to provide a response.”

No details have been released about which games were involved or whether any of the bets related to matches involving his own clubs.

A career interrupted

Sherif’s rise had been steady rather than spectacular. Born in Liberia, he joined Everton’s youth system in 2019 and worked his way through the academy ranks before stepping up to train with the first team in early 2025. For a young forward trying to break into the Premier League, the pathway finally seemed to be opening.

Game time, though, came elsewhere.

Last summer, Sherif moved to League One side Rotherham United on loan, where he scored twice in 10 appearances. That spell was cut short in December after a run of injuries prompted Everton to recall him, halting the momentum he had started to build.

He went back out again in February, this time to Port Vale for the remainder of the campaign. Sherif added another two goals in 17 League One outings, but could not prevent Vale from sliding into relegation.

Now, instead of focusing on the next step in his development, the forward faces a disciplinary battle that could shape the direction of his career.
