Marshall Rallies to Defeat VCU 3-1 in Comeback Victory
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, steadied itself, then tore through VCU.
Down a goal inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd roared back with three unanswered strikes to beat the Rams 3-1 on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, pushing their unbeaten start to 2-0-2.
Early mistake, early wake-up call
Marshall gifted VCU the opener. A defensive lapse left Ty Johnson clean through on goal, and he made no mistake, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and tapping it in for a 1-0 Rams lead in the seventh minute.
On the sideline, Chris Grassie watched another new-look lineup take a hard lesson.
"We have a lot of new players. I think it takes time to gel and get the things we need," the Marshall head coach said. "The way we pass balls is our communication. We make actions on the field, we move in a certain motion. We're always communicating with our teammates around us and I think that communication has moments of pure clarity and moments of confusion. I think we have to ride this out. There's a very good team in there somewhere, but we have to go through the rigors to make sure we gel and get our communication spot on."
The response came quickly.
Apolinario stunner flips the mood
Eight minutes after falling behind, Marshall struck from distance. Goncalo Machado laid the ball off to Thiago Apolinario, who sized up the space and unleashed a drive from nearly 40 yards. The shot caught VCU keeper Manuel Monteiro off guard and ripped into the net for Apolinario’s third goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1.
The goal settled Marshall, but VCU didn’t fade. The Rams continued to threaten through the rest of the first half, forcing Obert into action. His key save in the 31st minute kept the game level and sent the teams to the break even, with the Herd still searching for rhythm but very much alive.
Roberto swings it, Obert guards it
The second half belonged to Marshall.
Just under five minutes after the restart, the ball broke kindly to Joao Roberto off a deflection just outside the 18-yard box. He pounced. Roberto drilled his shot past Monteiro at the 49:26 mark, turning a nervy night into a 2-1 Herd advantage.
From there, VCU chased. Marshall’s back line bent but did not crack, with Obert again standing tall. He produced another pair of vital saves in the 59th and 85th minutes, each time preserving the one-goal cushion as the Rams pushed for an equalizer.
Romberg slams the door
The pressure finally snapped the other way.
In the 90th minute, a VCU mistake at the back left Carl Romberg in alone. The Marshall attacker punished it, slotting home the third goal to seal the result and cap the comeback at 3-1.
Marshall walked off under the lights with three goals, three points, and a reminder that this new group can take a hit and answer.

The Herd stay at Hoops Family Field, hosting Utah Valley on Friday at 7:15 p.m., with another chance to sharpen that chemistry Grassie keeps talking about.
