Marc Cucurella's Swift Move to Real Madrid
Marc Cucurella didn’t so much choose Real Madrid as get swept up by it.
The Spain international has revealed that his move to the Bernabeu unfolded at breakneck speed, leaving little room for second thoughts or alternative plans, even with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid circling.
“It all happened in a day and a half or two,” he told El Mundo, describing a whirlwind process that cut through the usual transfer saga noise. For a player used to the drawn-out drama that can surround big moves, the clarity was a relief. “As far as I’m concerned, it was much better that way – much quicker, with no headaches.”
Madrid call, doubts disappear
Real Madrid had identified left-back as one of the few areas in need of reinforcement ahead of the new season, and once their interest became concrete, Cucurella’s internal debate effectively ended.
He acknowledged that he had looked at other possibilities, with Barcelona and Atletico monitoring his situation, but the tone shifted the moment Madrid stepped in.
“At the end of the day, playing for Real Madrid is an honour and not many players can say that, so I had no doubts whatsoever,” he said. “I think both I and those around me – my family – were clear that this was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down, and I’m very happy with the decision we’ve made.”
For a defender who has built his career step by step, often away from the spotlight, the speed of this deal matched the scale of the club coming in for him. No drawn-out negotiations, no public stand-offs. Just a call, a decision, and a new chapter.
From La Masia to the Bernabeu
The twist, of course, lies in his past.
Cucurella is a product of La Masia, schooled at Barcelona before forging his path elsewhere. That background inevitably raised eyebrows when he chose the Catalan club’s fiercest rivals.
He didn’t duck the subject. Instead, he framed it as a natural evolution.
“Life has different stages. In this case, I’ve had to make an important decision and I have no doubts; I think it’s a huge step for me,” he said.
“When you’re a child, you dream of playing for the big clubs, and I think Real Madrid is one of them. It’s the team with the most Champions League titles in the world and I hope to win trophies with them and have a wonderful spell there.”
The message was clear: sentiment and academy ties have their place, but career-defining chances at the very top level do not come around often. For Cucurella, this was one of them.
Mourinho’s call and a clear message
Behind the scenes, Jose Mourinho’s influence loomed large. The Portuguese coach had marked left-back as a priority position and quickly homed in on Cucurella as a solution.
They spoke early in the process, and the conversation left its mark.
“We had a chat and he told me he was really keen to work with me, that I’d settle in very well, and that Real Madrid was a great club,” Cucurella recalled. “Then, that was it – he wished me all the best for the World Cup and said we’d see each other in Madrid.”
Reports suggested Mourinho had pushed hard to get the deal over the line, even to the point of making Cucurella his preferred – if not only – option at left-back. Asked whether the coach had delivered an ultimatum to the club, the defender was careful not to embellish.
“Did he say, ‘It’s either you or I won’t sign any left-back’? No, I don’t know if he said that,” he replied.
What he does know is that the manager’s conviction helped cut through any lingering hesitation. A coach of Mourinho’s stature telling you he wants you, that you fit, that you’ll thrive – that carries weight in any dressing room, let alone at the Bernabeu.
The move is done, the decision made in under 48 hours. Now comes the hard part: proving that this rapid-fire transfer can anchor a long, successful spell in white.
