Chelsea Pursue Defender Honest Ahanor from Atalanta

Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Honest Ahanor, opening preliminary talks with Atalanta and the defender’s representatives, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The London club have been tracking the Italy international and have now made their first formal moves, sounding out both the Serie A side and the player’s entourage over a potential deal. It is an ambitious target. Atalanta have already shown this summer how hard they intend to hold the line.

Brighton tested their resolve earlier in the window with a €34m offer. Atalanta turned it down. Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli then underlined in July that the club had no intention of cashing in on their best and most promising players, explicitly including Ahanor in that group.

That stance now faces another serious examination.

Ahanor, just 18, joined Atalanta from Genoa in 2025 for €16m, a sizeable fee for a teenager that already looks shrewd. He has since forced his way into the first team, making 28 Serie A appearances and earning his senior Italy debut in June under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini.

His profile fits the modern blueprint. Left-footed, aggressive in the duel and tactically flexible, Ahanor can operate as a left wing-back or as a centre-back, especially on the left side of a three-man defence. That versatility makes him particularly attractive to clubs looking to build around adaptable, ball-playing defenders.

Atalanta are entering a new era of their own. Giuntoli has just begun his first season in Bergamo and has been reunited with Maurizio Sarri, the coach he previously worked with at Napoli. Together they are trying to keep Atalanta competitive while resisting the annual raids on their standout talents.

Chelsea know that story well. The two clubs have already done business this summer, with Marco Palestra swapping the Gewiss Stadium for Stamford Bridge in a €60m move. That deal proved there is a working channel between the sides — and that Atalanta will sell, but only at their price.

Whether the same path opens for Ahanor now depends on how far Chelsea are willing to push, and how long Atalanta can keep the next jewel of their back line out of the Premier League’s reach.
