Manchester United U19s Dominates Sabah FK 5–0 in Youth League Opener
Manchester United’s youngsters tore into their UEFA Youth League campaign with the kind of statement win that makes the rest of the group sit up. On a bright Thursday afternoon at Leigh Sports Village, Sabah FK were swept aside 5–0 as United’s U19s, led by the club’s U21s boss, produced a relentless, attacking display.
This wasn’t a gentle easing into Europe. It was a blitz.
Lightning start
Sabah barely had time to settle before they were behind. Inside two minutes, Jim Thwaites whipped in a dangerous free-kick from the left and Amir Ibragimov darted across the near post, glancing the ball home to set the tone.
United smelled blood.
JJ Gabriel almost doubled the lead moments later, driving a fierce effort from the edge of the area that the Sabah goalkeeper did superbly to tip over. The visitors spent long spells trapped in their own half, occasionally trying to break out through the tireless running of Shahin Ibrahimov, who repeatedly surged forward on the counter only to find himself isolated and outnumbered.
The pressure finally told again in the 16th minute. Bendito Mantato’s cross fizzed all the way across the box, and Jacob Watson met it on his weaker right foot, drilling in United’s second to give the hosts full control.
There was one setback. In his first start of the season, Godwill Kukonki rolled his ankle and had to be withdrawn on 20 minutes, with Rafe McCormack coming on in his place. The change did nothing to disrupt United’s rhythm.
Just before the break, they struck again. Junior Brown saw his effort blocked in a crowded penalty area, but the loose ball fell kindly for Gabriel. He pounced, smashing in United’s third on the stroke of half-time to cap a dominant opening 45 minutes.
Relentless dominance
The second half brought no mercy for Sabah. United kept the tempo high, kept the ball moving, and kept creating chances.
Brown came close to a stunning goal when he cut in from the left and curled a beautiful effort towards the top-right corner, only to be denied by a brilliant, stretching save. The scoreline stayed at three, but the pattern was one-way traffic.
United’s superiority was absolute. Sabah struggled to get out, let alone threaten Cameron Byrne-Hughes’ goal. They would finish the game without a single effort at goal, while United racked up an astonishing 44 attempts.
The fourth finally arrived late on. Gabriel, already buzzing from his first-half strike, danced past his marker in the box and calmly steered a low finish into the far right corner. Composed, clinical, ruthless.
He wasn’t done.
Thwaites, who had opened the afternoon with that teasing free-kick, produced another moment of quality, threading a superb through ball behind the Sabah defence. Gabriel raced clear, one-on-one, and made no mistake to complete his hat-trick and seal a 5–0 rout.
