Manchester United Targets Khephren Thuram for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild under Michael Carrick is gathering speed – and the next move could come from Turin.

Having already pushed through a deal worth more than £40million for Atalanta’s Ederson, United are now weighing up a second major investment in the centre of the pitch, with Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram emerging as a serious option.

Casemiro’s departure has left a sizeable gap at the base of United’s midfield. One signing was never going to be enough. Last season’s third-place finish in the Premier League offered encouragement, but it also exposed the limits of a squad stretched thin in key areas. If United want to move from solid to genuinely threatening – to talk about titles with a straight face and handle the demands of the Champions League – the middle of the park needs more depth, more legs, more bite.

Thuram ticks a lot of those boxes.

A window of opportunity in Turin

The timing is intriguing. Reports in Italy suggest Juventus must raise between £10million and £11million by the end of the month to remain financially compliant after missing out on Champions League qualification. That pressure to sell has put several players in the shop window, and Thuram is one of the most attractive assets.

Juve paid around €20million to bring him in, but their stance now is clear: they want between £35million and £40million. That figure is said to be slightly below the earlier numbers floated, but still represents a strong profit for the Italian side.

According to Corriere dello Sport, relayed via Man Utd news, United are actively considering meeting that valuation. They are not alone. Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia are already prepared to pay the asking price, yet this is where United’s chances sharpen. Thuram is understood to prefer staying in Europe, with a move to the Premier League at the top of his list. He has already turned down Galatasaray this summer, underlining both his ambition and his selectiveness.

For a club trying to re-establish itself as a destination for peak-age talent, that matters.

What Thuram would bring to Old Trafford

On the pitch, Thuram offers exactly what Carrick’s evolving side craves: energy, range, and a willingness to embrace the physical fight. He is a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of driving through lines with and without the ball, and he doesn’t shrink from contact.

His qualities have not gone unnoticed in Italy. Maurizio Sarri’s long-time assistant Giovanni Martusciello singled him out last year, saying: “Who do I like? Thuram, I think he’s extraordinary. Overall, they seem like a team that can have its say until the end. Then, to fight for the big goals, at least the ones they’ve always had in Turin, we need more time.”

That word – “extraordinary” – lingers. It hints at a ceiling not yet reached.

At 25, Thuram is entering what should be his prime years. He has the athletic profile to cope with the Premier League’s tempo and the technical base to adapt quickly to United’s possession demands. He can break up play, carry the ball, and support attacks, giving Carrick options to reshape the midfield around Ederson and the remaining core.

There is also a practical advantage. Thuram is currently free to discuss his future, with no international commitments tying him down after he missed out on France’s World Cup squad. Negotiations, if United choose to press ahead, can move quickly.

United have made a strong start to their summer work. The real question now is whether they are prepared to strike decisively again – and turn Juventus’ financial need into the signing that completes Carrick’s new-look engine room.
