Manchester United vs Sabah FK: Champions League Group Stage Opener
Manchester United’s long wait is over. After three years in the wilderness, the club walks back under the Champions League lights on Thursday night, with Old Trafford hosting Azerbaijani side Sabah FK in a group-stage opener loaded with expectation and risk.

Carrick’s balancing act
Michael Carrick faces a brutal juggling act across four days that could shape United’s early season. Sabah on Thursday, the Manchester derby against City on Sunday. Two very different stages, the same demand: win.

Yet this is not a bare-bones United. Far from it. The manager still has the tools to put out a side that should dominate a Sabah team making its first appearance in the Champions League group phase. The challenge is to do it while keeping enough fuel in the tank for City.
How United could line up vs Sabah
Carrick is expected to lean on a blend of youth, new signings and established leaders, a side strong enough to set the tone in Europe but with an eye on Sunday.

Lammens in goal would signal trust in the Belgian’s temperament on a big European night. In front of him, Dalot and Mazraoui offer width and energy from full-back, while the combination of Yoro and Martínez brings a mix of youthful athleticism and left-footed aggression at the heart of defence.
In midfield, Mainoo and Tielemans promise control. Mainoo’s composure and press resistance next to Tielemans’ range of passing should give United a platform to pin Sabah back and dictate the tempo rather than chase it.
The real sparkle lies ahead of them. Bruno Fernandes remains the creative axis, the player Sabah must somehow contain. Either side of him, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha bring movement, invention and a willingness to attack space from different angles, constantly shifting the picture for defenders.
Up front, Šeško offers height, power and penalty-box presence. Against a side with no Champions League group-stage experience, his physicality and sharpness in the area could quickly tilt the night in United’s favour.
Sabah arrive as unknowns on this stage. United return as a club desperate to reassert itself among Europe’s elite. For Carrick, the question is simple: can this reshaped XI deliver a statement on Thursday without draining itself before City come calling on Sunday?
