Manchester United's Return to Champions League: Key Players and Predictions

Three years after their last taste of Champions League football, Manchester United walk back under the Old Trafford lights on Thursday night with the weight of expectation firmly on their shoulders and Sabah FK cast as the supposed cannon fodder.

Michael Carrick, the former midfield metronome now in full command of the dugout, earned this return to Europe with last season’s third-place Premier League finish. That run didn’t just restore some pride; it convinced the club to hand him the job on a permanent basis. Now comes the next test: turning domestic momentum into European authority.

Injuries, Returns and One Big Question at Left-Back

Carrick’s preparations have been shaped by the medical bulletin as much as the opposition.

Mason Mount’s reappearance in full training offers a timely lift. The England international has been edging back from injury and was spotted working with the main group ahead of this tie, giving Carrick another creative option between the lines or deeper in midfield.

At centre-back, Matthijs de Ligt is edging towards the end of a long and frustrating recovery from a back problem. He is close, but not quite over the line yet, and remains a doubt for this opener.

The biggest concern sits on the left side of defence. Luke Shaw, who came through the 2-2 draw at Everton but has been carefully managed since, is Carrick’s major doubt. Shaw was decisive at the Hill Dickenson Stadium, whipping in the assist for Benjamin Sesko’s goal, and his absence would force a reshuffle in a key area.

Sesko himself is pushing hard to start. The Slovenian striker is almost at full fitness again after a shin issue disrupted the end of his last campaign. Carrick has hinted he is close to being ready to lead the line from the first whistle.

Not everyone is so fortunate. Amad Diallo is set to be sidelined until October with an ankle problem, while new signing Carlos Baleba finds himself in a similar position after his move from Brighton and Hove Albion. Manuel Ugarte is also out, trimming Carrick’s options in midfield.

Senne Lammens is expected to get the nod in goal.

At right-back, Carrick faces a straight choice between Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot. Shaw’s uncertainty complicates that call. If the England defender doesn’t make it, one of Mazraoui or Dalot could be asked to switch flanks and plug the gap on the left.

There is also the wildcard of Harry Amass. The youngster stayed at Old Trafford despite late transfer interest and has impressed enough to at least nudge his way into the conversation for a place in the squad, if not the starting XI.

In central defence, De Ligt’s ongoing recovery keeps the door open for others. Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez started together at Everton, a pairing that had already been broken up in pre-season by the emergence of Ayden Heaven alongside Maguire. Heaven could be recalled here, while Leny Yoro offers another option if Carrick wants to rotate or manage minutes ahead of a busy schedule.

Midfield Choices and a £48m Temptation

The engine room has required some quick thinking. Baleba and Ugarte’s injuries strip away depth, but Mount’s return helps to steady the picture.

Recently, Carrick has leaned on a double pivot of Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo in his 4-2-3-1. Tielemans’ passing range and Mainoo’s composure have given United a calm base to build from, and there is little reason to rip that up on the eve of a European opener.

Waiting in the wings is Andrey Santos. The £48m signing from Chelsea did not arrive to watch from the bench for long. He will be desperate for a first big-stage start in red and is pushing to break into that midfield pairing, even if this one might come too soon for a full changing of the guard.

Attack Built Around Bruno – and a Big Call on Rashford

The attacking third still runs through Bruno Fernandes. The captain is set to operate in his usual central role behind the striker, with Bryan Mbeumo likely to start to his right, offering direct running and end product from the flank.

The key decision lies up front. If Sesko is deemed ready to start, it could trigger a domino effect. Marcus Rashford, who has carried a heavy load across recent seasons, may be handed a rest, with Matheus Cunha then sliding out to the left wing to accommodate Sesko through the middle.

It would give United a fresh look in attack, with pace and movement across the front line against opponents expected to sit deep and cling on.
