Manchester United vs Brighton: Shaw's Return and Squad Rotation in Carabao Cup

Manchester United look to Luke Shaw as they try to reset their season tonight, with Brighton visiting Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup.

The mood around the club has been sour since the weekend. A tight, bad-tempered derby, decided by a single Erling Haaland goal that United felt should have been ruled out, has left scars. Now comes a different kind of test: respond, rotate, and still survive in a competition that might yet offer their best shot at silverware.

Shaw and De Ligt edging back

The headline news is Shaw. The left-back is believed to be close to a return and could finally get minutes against the Seagulls. United have missed his balance, his passing lanes, his ability to drag them up the pitch from deep. If he’s fit enough, even a short outing would be significant.

Matthijs de Ligt is on a similar path. Out since November with a back problem, the Dutchman has been a glaring absence in a defence that has started the campaign with too many gaps and not enough authority. His full comeback is not here yet, but the fact he is closing in offers some badly needed reassurance for the weeks ahead.

Carrick ready to shuffle the pack

With a trip to Fulham looming on Sunday and a three-week international break to follow, Michael Carrick is expected to lean on his squad. This is not a night for full-strength at all costs.

Senne Lammens may step aside in goal, with Karl Darlow in line for a start. At right-back, Diogo Dalot’s shaky display in the derby has opened the door for Noussair Mazraoui to come in and stake his claim.

At centre-back, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire have been the default pairing, but both could be spared. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are ready to step in if Carrick chooses to protect his first-choice duo from another intense 90 minutes.

On the left, Shaw’s fitness will dictate everything. If he’s ready, he is expected to get some game time ahead of Dorgu. That would allow the Denmark international to push higher up the pitch.

Dorgu higher, Rashford rested?

Dorgu could be used as an out-and-out winger in Carrick’s 4-2-3-1, a tweak that would give Marcus Rashford the chance to sit this one out and recharge. Rashford has carried a heavy burden again this season; a breather in the cup would be no surprise.

On the opposite flank, the options are thinner. Amad Diallo’s ankle injury has left United light on the right, which may force Bryan Mbeumo into the starting XI again. The alternative is to throw youngster Shea Lacey into the fray, but that would be a bold call on a night when United can’t really afford another stumble.

Midfield choices and the No10 question

In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans remain Carrick’s preferred double pivot. They control the tempo when United are at their best, but this tie could offer a chance to share the load. Andrey Santos is pushing for minutes and tonight may be his opening, especially with Carlos Baleba still sidelined by an ankle problem.

Ahead of them, Bruno Fernandes is expected to keep his place as the No10. He rarely sits out, and Carrick trusts his edge, his urgency, his knack for forcing the game. Mason Mount, unused against City, stands by as an alternative if the manager opts to freshen up his creative hub.

United need a response, and they need it quickly. The Carabao Cup might not define their season, but another flat night at Old Trafford just might.
