Edmond Tapsoba: Premier League Battle for Defender
Edmond Tapsoba has moved to the front of the defensive queue for three Premier League heavyweights, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Newcastle all circling the Bayer Leverkusen centre-back this summer.
The 27-year-old Burkina Faso international has become one of the most closely watched defenders in Europe in recent weeks, and interest from England is now sharpening into action.
United make the first move
Manchester United have already stepped beyond simple admiration. Club figures have made contact with Tapsoba’s representatives to explore a deal, sounding out the conditions required to bring him to Old Trafford.
Tottenham and Newcastle are not standing still either. Both clubs are keeping up regular dialogue as they weigh up how aggressively to move for a player viewed as a major upgrade for their back lines.
Leverkusen, though, are no soft touch. The German champions have placed a firm price tag of €50million (£42.8m / £58.4m) on Tapsoba and are prepared to stand by it.
Leverkusen hold the cards
Tapsoba signed a contract extension earlier this year that runs all the way to 2031. That deal gives Leverkusen enormous leverage. They would rather keep him at the heart of their defence, but have left the door slightly ajar if a bid lands that fully matches their valuation.
Inside the Bundesliga, he is viewed as one of the most complete centre-backs in the division: powerful in duels, comfortable carrying or passing out from the back, and athletic enough to patrol big spaces behind a high line. That blend of traits is exactly what Premier League clubs crave.
His style has been repeatedly highlighted as tailor-made for the pace and intensity of English football, a key reason why interest from United, Spurs and Newcastle has not gone away.
From Guimaraes to the top of the market
Tapsoba arrived at Leverkusen from Vitoria Guimaraes in 2020. Since then, he has grown into a fixture in their defence, racking up 270 appearances in all competitions and contributing 13 goals along the way.
That level of consistency, at a club competing at the sharp end of the Bundesliga and in Europe, has pushed his name towards the top of every recruitment list in need of a centre-back.
A three-way battle in a tight market
With the transfer window still open, movement around Tapsoba is expected to intensify. Manchester United are currently seen as the most advanced in their talks, but the presence of Tottenham and Newcastle ensures this will not be a simple chase.
Leverkusen’s high asking price, combined with the security of a long-term contract, leaves the German side in a commanding position at the negotiating table. Any club wanting to prise him away will have to pay full freight.
Whether Tapsoba makes the leap to the Premier League this summer is still unresolved. What is clear is that, in a market short on top-class centre-backs, he has become one of the most coveted defensive options available — and someone who could yet reshape the back line of whichever English club wins the race.
