Manchester United head to Poland this weekend with one last preseason job to do – and a very familiar figure waiting for them on the opposite bench.

Amorim’s time at United ended in chaos at the start of 2026 after a breakdown in relations with key figures upstairs. He didn’t stay unemployed for long, but the scars from that spell remain. His reputation dipped, yet Milan have gambled that he is the right man to succeed Massimiliano Allegri and jolt a giant back to life.
They badly need it. The Rossoneri, Serie A champions four years ago, have watched Inter collect two titles since and finished a distant fifth last season, 17 points adrift of the champions. The mood around Milan is brittle, and preseason has done nothing to soothe it.
Three friendlies, no wins. A humbling 3–0 defeat to Chelsea in Jakarta. Supporters restless, local media unimpressed, and Amorim already pushing hard for reinforcements despite the headline $84 million signing of Gonçalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain. The pressure is not creeping up on him; it’s already there.
United Arrive Settled, Sharp, and Unbeaten
United, by contrast, feel stable. Michael Carrick’s work as interim boss has shifted the atmosphere at the club. A third-place Premier League finish has put them back in the Champions League, and their summer has carried the air of a team quietly knitting things together.
They have stayed in Europe, tested themselves against Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, and come through unbeaten. A 1–1 draw with Leeds United on Wednesday extended that run and kept the rhythm of a productive preseason intact.
This is not a nostalgic trip to see an old manager. It’s a chance for Carrick to underline how far United have moved on since Amorim’s departure – and to do it in front of him.
The expectation? A settled side against one still searching for its shape. That usually has only one outcome in August.

Team News: Rashford Returns, Milan Patch Things Up
Carrick has already all but confirmed that Marcus Rashford will get minutes in Poland. The England forward is in line for his first appearance since December 2024, a significant boost for United’s attack. Lisandro Martínez is also ready to feature again after the thigh problem he picked up in the World Cup final.
Kobbie Mainoo is back from a low-key World Cup, but he returns to a more crowded midfield. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have arrived to stiffen competition in the middle of the park.
