Manchester City Rotation Ahead of Porto Clash
Enzo Maresca is not in the mood to play it safe. Not with Porto on Tuesday, a three-day turnaround, and a Manchester derby looming on the horizon. Rotation is coming for Manchester City – and some big names may feel it.
Fernandez faces early reality check
Enzo Fernandez arrived for £125m and walked straight into the spotlight again at the weekend, but this time by accident rather than design. He was supposed to watch most of the Coventry City game from the bench, eased into life under Maresca. Then Nico O'Reilly felt his back go in the warm-up, and the plan was ripped up on the spot.
Fernandez was thrown into the XI for his full debut, lining up alongside Elliot Anderson and lasting 76 minutes. It was tidy, controlled, a glimpse of what he can bring. But it also came earlier, and for longer, than Maresca had intended. With Porto away and United to follow, sentiment will not dictate the next call. Rest might.
That opens the door for Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Bouaddi ready for European stage again
The teenager already knows what Champions League nights feel like from his time at Lille. He has seen the tempo, the tension, the need to think quickly and play even quicker. Maresca has talked up his depth, and this is exactly the kind of week where that depth must carry the load.
Bouaddi is “undoubtedly ready for the occasion” in the eyes of the staff, and his inclusion could be one of up to four changes from the side that beat Coventry. Fresh legs, fresh ideas, same demands.
Foden primed, Ndiaye waits
Up front, there is another decision brewing. Iliman Ndiaye’s debut ended in the 87th minute with cramp, a reminder of the physical jump and the intensity Maresca wants without the ball. The Senegalese forward is expected to be available for the trip to the Estadio do Dragao, but the dynamic could change if Phil Foden is fully fit.
A fully-sharp Foden is hard to ignore in any game, let alone in Europe. His promotion to the starting XI at Ndiaye’s expense would add more incision around Erling Haaland and offer Maresca a different type of creativity between the lines. Jeremy Doku, still nursing a calf problem, remains out of the equation.
Full-backs under review
The changes will not stop in midfield and attack. At the weekend, Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol filled the full-back roles, tucking in and stepping out as Maresca’s structure demanded. Both did the job. Both may still step aside.
Matheus Nunes and Rayan Ait-Nouri are pushing to start and bring a different rhythm down the flanks. With William Gomes and Pepe expected to test City’s defensive shape, Maresca has the option to inject more energy and ball-carrying from wide areas, without losing control of build-up.

All of that points towards a bold, rotated XI that still looks formidable on paper. Maresca is expected to lean into his squad and trust those waiting in the wings.
