Maine Black Bears Tie Providence in Gritty Showdown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Maine walked out of Chapey Field with more than just a draw. The Black Bears left with a statement.
Against unbeaten Providence, a program that has long had their number, Maine dug in for a 1-1 tie on Thursday night at Anderson Stadium, snapping a long run of frustration against Big East opposition.
They did it with a moment of pure quality right before the break.
Meadows strikes on the stroke of halftime
With the clock bleeding out in the first half, Victoria Dungey seized control at midfield. She spun through two Friars defenders, slipped into space, and threaded a ball straight up the gut for a charging Isabella Meadows.
Meadows didn’t hesitate. She surged onto the pass, drove into the box and coolly rolled her finish inside the right post with 37 seconds left in the half. One pass, one touch, one ruthless finish. Maine, 1-0 up and suddenly in command.
The goal was Meadows’ second of the season and Dungey’s second assist of the year, a fitting contribution on the night of her 60th career game.
Friars respond late after review
Providence, still unbeaten on the season, refused to go quietly. The Friars pushed higher, asked questions from wide areas and kept forcing Maine to defend deeper and deeper.
The pressure finally told in the closing stages.
With under 10 minutes to play, Providence found the net, only to see the flag go up for offside. Brief relief for Maine. But after a review, the decision was overturned and the goal stood, leveling the match at 1-1 and tilting the momentum back toward the home side.
Maine held firm from there, leaning on discipline and a busy night from goalkeeper Elena Barenberg, who finished with five saves.
