Liberty Lady Flames Secure 1-0 Victory Over JMU
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty didn’t blink. Short-handed at the back, locked in a scrap with a familiar foe, the Lady Flames still found a late winner and another clean sheet.
With the match drifting toward a third straight draw between the programs, Halle Engle struck in the 82nd minute to seal a 1-0 home win over James Madison on Thursday night, pushing Liberty to 6-2-1 and a perfect 4-0 at Osborne Stadium.
Engle Breaks the Deadlock
For 80 minutes, it was a grind.
JMU, at 2-4 coming in, leaned into a physical game plan and went after a Liberty defense missing its anchor, center back Lauren Littleton. The Dukes edged the first half in shots, 7-5, with both sides registering three efforts on frame, and they kept Liberty from finding any real rhythm in the final third.
The game tightened further after the break. Every touch seemed to carry extra weight. Every clearance drew a roar.
Then Engle found her moment.
With eight minutes left, the forward timed her run along the JMU back line as Margaret Garner drove at the defense. Garner delayed just long enough, then slipped a pass into space. Engle burst through, beat the charging goalkeeper to the ball, and tucked home the go-ahead strike.
JMU immediately protested, arms raised for offside. A video review followed. The goal stood.
Osborne Stadium exhaled, then erupted.
It was Engle’s third goal of the season and the 11th game-winner of her Liberty career, a number that now defines her as one of the program’s most reliable closers.
Leja Slams the Door
Once in front, Liberty did what it has done so often this season: defended with composure and trusted its goalkeeper.
James Madison managed just one shot in the final eight minutes as the Lady Flames calmly bled the clock. Behind them, Ainsley Leja turned in another standout performance, finishing with a season-high-tying six saves to lock down her third full 90-minute shutout of the year.
Leja now owns a 4-1-1 record with a 0.80 goals-against average and a .806 save percentage. Thursday’s clean sheet pushed her career total of 90-minute shutouts to 24, and it gave Liberty its fifth shutout of the season.
That stability at the back came even without Littleton. In her place, Dani Gubbels stepped into the starting XI for the first start of her career, part of a defensive unit that saw five Lady Flames go the full 90 minutes.
Edging a Familiar Rival
These two programs know each other too well for anything to come easy. Liberty’s win nudged its all-time record against JMU to 4-8-2, and the Lady Flames now hold a 3-2-2 mark in the last seven meetings with the Dukes.
The margin, again, was razor-thin. But Liberty continues to thrive in that space.
It was the second 1-0 victory of the season for the Lady Flames, who previously edged VCU by the same scoreline. Engle now leads the team with three goals, while Garner (2 goals, 2 assists) and Avenly Monteith (2 goals, 2 assists) sit level with her on six total points.
The attack has options. The defense has an identity. The numbers back it up.
Senior Day and a Final Tune-Up
Next comes a different kind of test.
Liberty closes its non-conference schedule on Sunday afternoon at Osborne Stadium against Old Dominion (2-4), a match wrapped in emotion as the program honors 11 members of its 2026 Senior Class in a pre-game ceremony.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., with the game streaming live on ESPN+.
The Lady Flames have already proven they can win tight, tactical battles. The question now is how far this blend of resilience, depth, and late-game nerve can carry them once conference play arrives.
