Kylian Mbappé's Journey to Real Madrid: A Decade in the Making
Kylian Mbappé says his move to Real Madrid was a decade in the making – and that no one, not even Florentino Pérez, ever really had to convince him.
The French star, now finally in white at the Santiago Bernabéu, lifted the lid in an interview with AS on how long and how personally Madrid’s president worked on bringing him to Spain.
“He’s the one who brought me here. We’ve stayed in touch for ten years before I arrived,” Mbappé revealed. “He always showed affection and understanding in the context of every decision made, both positive and negative for Real Madrid. He always told me that one day I would play for Real Madrid, and here I am, and very happy.”
That line – ten years of contact – quickly bounced around social media, with Mbappé quoted again as saying: “I was in contact with Pérez since 10 years before joining Real Madrid.”
For all that influence, Mbappé insists the Madrid badge sells itself. This was never a hard sell, more the closing of a circle for a kid who grew up with Bernabéu icons on his bedroom wall.
“To be honest, nothing and no one has to convince you to come to Real Madrid,” the World Cup winner said. “In my history with Madrid, I wanted to come, but it wasn’t possible, and ultimately, in football, there are moments and decisions that are beyond your control. In football, timing is key, and you have to wait for everything to be right before you can go.”
The failed attempts hurt. He does not hide that. There was frustration as earlier moves collapsed, but he refused to dwell on what might have been.
“Of course, there’s disappointment, but a footballer’s life is about looking forward, not back,” he admitted.
So when the door finally opened, there was no need for a grand presentation or a persuasive speech from the most powerful man in Spanish football. The choice, Mbappé says, was obvious.
“No one had to convince me to come to Real Madrid, not even Pérez, as big a club as he is. It was obvious,” he said. Then he went even further: “If you want to be part of football history, one day you have to play for Real Madrid.”
Since landing in the Spanish capital, Mbappé has eased into life at Valdebebas and into the rhythm of Madrid. The move from France has brought a calmer daily existence, even as his global profile has surged again in the white shirt.
“I expected the best club in the world, to receive a lot of excitement from Madridistas all over the world,” he said. “When I arrived here I already had a status, but when you are a Real Madrid player you move to another level, to a higher level. I think that if you want to belong to the history of football, you have to go through Real Madrid.”
A decade of quiet conversations has finally delivered the move both sides always believed would happen. Now the question is simple: how big a chapter will Mbappé write in the history he always felt destined to join?
