Kilshannig Crush Bishopstown in Senior A Football Championship
Kilshannig didn’t just win in Mallow on Saturday night. They imposed themselves, tore through Bishopstown, and planted a flag in the McCarthy Insurance Senior A Football Championship.
This was a ruthless, powerful performance – 2-25 on the board and a second win secured, with Bishopstown left staring at a must-win final round and the shadow of a relegation playoff.
Ferocious start, early warning
The game opened at a frantic pace. Daire O’Sullivan clipped over a stylish point to settle Kilshannig, but Bishopstown hit back with real class – a flowing move ending with full-forward Gary Holland stroking over a superb equaliser.
For a few minutes, it looked like a shoot-out. Kieran Twomey and Michael Murphy nudged Kilshannig two clear, only for Holland to threaten something bigger. He carved out a goal chance, the kind you have to finish on a night like this. He didn’t. It would haunt Bishopstown.
Both defences rocked under pressure. Space appeared everywhere. When Twomey struck a brilliant two-pointer midway through the half, Kilshannig suddenly had daylight and the Town were wobbling.
Bishopstown saw plenty of ball but lacked any real edge in front of goal. Kilshannig were the opposite – direct, confident, and clinical. They ran hard at the Bishopstown rearguard, forced gaps, and punished every lapse.
Tom Cunningham then took over. Two points in quick succession, all muscle and accuracy, and the North Cork side were cruising at the break, 0-14 to 0-7 ahead.
Bishopstown rally snuffed out
Bishopstown needed a spark and got one almost instantly on the restart. Just 40 seconds in, Holland split the posts. Moments later, Kieran McFadden added another white flag. Suddenly, there was a hint of life.
McFadden struck again in the 34th minute. The gap narrowed, the noise lifted, and for a brief spell Kilshannig were asked a question.
They answered it with a hammer blow.
Five minutes later, Killian O’Hanlon stepped up and launched a monstrous two-pointer, the kind of strike that drains belief from an opponent. From there, the city side never really recovered.
As the half wore on, Bishopstown’s defence simply gave way. The tackles lost their bite, the shape disappeared, and Kilshannig smelled blood.
Cunningham, already dominating around the middle, powered through and drilled an unstoppable shot to the net midway through the half. Any lingering doubt vanished.
Kilshannig didn’t ease off. They drove on.
Alan O’Connell made a surging run from the half-forward line, cut through the Town cover and finished with a composed, classy strike to the back of the net. Game over, long before the whistle.
Kilshannig in control, Bishopstown under pressure
By the finish, the scoreboard told the story: Kilshannig 2-25, Bishopstown 0-13. A statement win, and one that leaves Kilshannig in prime position heading into a “tasty” showdown with Éire Óg next month. Victory there could seal an automatic semi-final place.
For Bishopstown, the picture is far less appealing. Beaten by Éire Óg in the opener, well beaten here, they now must defeat Clyda Rovers in their final outing or brace themselves for a relegation playoff.
On this evidence, Kilshannig are moving one way. Bishopstown, unless they find a cutting edge and some defensive steel in a hurry, are in danger of being dragged the other.
