Juventus Signs Guglielmo Vicario on Loan from Tottenham
Juventus have struck a deal with Tottenham to take Guglielmo Vicario on an initial loan, turning to the Italian goalkeeper after abandoning a move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez.
The agreement includes an option to buy next summer for around £8.6m, giving Juve a relatively low-cost route to a permanent solution in goal. For Vicario, it marks a sharp change in fortunes. Signed as Spurs’ long-term No 1 in 2023, he now heads for Turin having lost his place under Roberto De Zerbi to Antonin Kinsky.
De Zerbi’s reshaping of the goalkeeping department has been ruthless. Once Kinsky claimed the starting role, Tottenham moved quickly, bringing in Martin Dubravka on a free transfer as experienced cover. That left Vicario squeezed out and, at 29, unwilling to sit on the bench while a Champions League club came calling.
Juventus had initially pushed for Martínez. Villa’s World Cup winner emerged as a prime target after the Premier League side agreed a deal worth around £30m with Parma for Zion Suzuki. Juve tested Villa’s resolve with a €10m offer over the weekend. It was rejected, decisively. With Martínez also sidelined by a finger injury, the Italian giants pivoted and closed in on Vicario instead.
The move ends a relatively brief but busy spell in north London for the Italy international. Vicario joined Spurs from Empoli in 2023 for £17.2m and has racked up almost 120 appearances since, a mainstay through managerial upheaval and squad churn. Now he becomes part of that churn.
He is far from alone. Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, Will Lankshear and Yves Bissouma have already gone as Tottenham continue a sweeping rebuild under De Zerbi. Pape Matar Sarr could follow, with Everton and Nottingham Forest both keen and the Senegal midfielder valued at around £30m.
This is a club spending aggressively and clearing space just as aggressively. Spurs have already committed more than £200m on six new signings in this window, a statement of intent and a clear break from the squad that limped through previous seasons.
The attacking department is next in line for surgery. Savinho, owned by Manchester City, is high on the list. The Brazilian forward did not feature for Enzo Maresca’s side in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Cardiff and is understood to be open to a move, a situation Tottenham are watching closely.
Cody Gakpo is another prominent name on their radar. The Liverpool forward has been heavily linked with Spurs as De Zerbi looks for greater firepower and flexibility in the final third. With Vicario heading for Serie A and the squad still in flux, Tottenham’s window is nowhere near finished – and the shape of De Zerbi’s new-look side is only just starting to emerge.
