Barcelona Nears Rodri Transfer as Medicals Shift to Catalonia

After days of hard bargaining, Barcelona have finally cracked Manchester City’s resistance and are on the brink of landing Rodri in one of the standout transfers of the summer.

The clubs have reached an agreement in principle for the 30-year-old midfielder worth €76.5 million, with €60 million guaranteed and the rest tied to add-ons. With that breakthrough, City have given the Spain captain permission to head to Barcelona and wrap up the move.

Change of plan for medicals

The deal is now in its final stretch, but not without a late tweak to the schedule.

Rodri had initially been expected to complete his medical in England today before flying out. That plan has been shelved. Journalist Achraf Ben Ayad reports that the 2026 FIFA World Cup winner will instead undergo his medical tests in Catalonia on Tuesday morning, 18 August.

Barcelona managed to secure an earlier flight for the midfielder, prompting the change. He is now expected to land in the city this evening, with the medical booked for the following morning.

If all goes as expected, the next steps are straightforward: medical completed, contract signed, transfer announced.

A heavyweight for Flick’s midfield

Barcelona are not just signing a name. They are signing a reference point.

Rodri arrives off a spectacular World Cup campaign, where he drove Spain to the title and walked away with the Golden Ball. At 30, he is not a long-term project, but that is not why Barça are paying big money.

They are buying authority in midfield. They are buying leadership, experience, and a player steeped in a winning culture, all wrapped in the technical assurance that has made him one of the finest midfielders in the game.

For Hansi Flick, it is a clutch addition. A pillar around which he can build the structure of his new Barcelona.

One question lingers in the short term: will the deal be completed in time for Rodri to feature in the club’s final pre-season outing, the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al Ahly on 19 August?
