Barcelona Maintains Contact with Rashford Amid United's Decision
Barcelona have not walked away from Marcus Rashford. Far from it.
The Spanish giants remain in contact with the forward’s representatives as they search for one more attacking piece and test whether a sensational return from Manchester United to the Nou Camp can still be dragged out of this transfer window.
Rashford is back at Old Trafford after 18 months in Barcelona colours, United’s highest-paid player restored to the squad and, for now, to the plans of head coach Michael Carrick. Barcelona declined to trigger their €30million (£26m/$35m) option to buy after a season in which Rashford produced 28 goal contributions across all competitions, preferring another loan. United drew a line there. Permanent deal or nothing.
So he came back.
Carrick and his staff have reintegrated the England international into the first-team group and are open to using him this season. United, at least publicly, are prepared to carry one of the Premier League’s heaviest wage packets and see if Rashford can re-establish himself as a central figure.
But the window is still open. And Barcelona are still hovering.
Only a handful of clubs can realistically take on the financial package needed to sign Rashford, and his camp has fielded interest from more than one side. Most walk away when the numbers land on the table. Barcelona remain at the conversation.
Rashford would not resist going back to Catalunya. He enjoyed his spell there and would be ready to return. The real question sits in Manchester: would United bend on their stance and accept another loan, even if it came with an obligation to buy built in? At this stage, that remains unclear.
Barcelona’s attack in flux
Barcelona’s need for firepower has grown since last season ended. Rashford has gone back to England, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have departed, and Roony Bardghji has been ruled out for the season with injury.
They have moved aggressively already, bringing in Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, yet the rebuild up front is not complete. Lines of communication with Rashford’s representatives have stayed open as the Catalan club map out their next move.
One major complication sits in Madrid.
Barcelona are still pushing for Julian Alvarez, but Atletico Madrid have shown no sign of softening their “not for sale” stance. Atletico have repeatedly told Barcelona they do not want to sell the Argentinian forward, and that stalemate is choking off one of the key avenues in Barcelona’s planning.
If that deadlock holds, Rashford’s name stays on the table. His profile, his versatility across the front line, and the existing relationship from his loan spell make him an obvious fallback option if Alvarez cannot be prised away.
United’s internal debate
For United, the decision is far less straightforward.
On one hand, Rashford is back in the fold, one of the most talented forwards at the club and a player Carrick is prepared to use. On the other, his salary represents a huge long-term commitment at a time when United are trying to reshape their squad and wage structure.
Inside Old Trafford, there is ongoing debate about whether carrying that contract is the smartest route if a serious offer lands from Barcelona or another elite club. Any proposal would have to work financially for United, not just in terms of fee, but also in what it allows them to do elsewhere in the market.
For now, nothing has broken. Rashford trains as a United player, Barcelona keep the door ajar, and the clock ticks towards deadline day.
The next move belongs to the clubs.
