José Mourinho's Cautious Approach with Aurelien Tchouameni
José Mourinho is in no mood to gamble with Aurelien Tchouameni. Not in August. Not after last season. Not after the World Cup scare that never quite went away.
According to AS, Real Madrid have made a clear internal call: Tchouameni will only return when he is at 100%, no shortcuts, no rushed cameos to plug early-season gaps. The French midfielder is too important to be treated as a stopgap solution.
World Cup knock that never healed properly
Tchouameni’s problems began in Qatar. He picked up an injury during the World Cup that forced him to miss two matches in the closing stages of the tournament, only to come back for the semi-final. That decision aggravated the issue. Since then, he has struggled to train at the same intensity as his teammates.
The knock followed him back to Madrid. It cost him the entire preseason. While others built rhythm and sharpness in the summer friendlies, Tchouameni watched from the sidelines, stuck between medical caution and competitive frustration.
Mourinho has seen that movie before. He is not interested in a repeat.
“With Tchouameni, we have to keep our emotions in check. I don't want him to be in and out, in and out again,” he said before the game against Malaga, laying out his stance with typical bluntness. “I don't want to start the season in August with a situation like this. I hope to have Tchouameni fit again, and I prefer to wait a little longer.”
The message was as much for the fans and the media as it was for the player: no risk, no rush.
A pillar in Mourinho’s blueprint
This is not about a squad player being eased back. For Mourinho, Tchouameni is one of the pillars of his project. That is precisely why the Portuguese coach refuses to bring him back for the third league match just to say he is available.
Tchouameni is the purest holding midfielder in this Real Madrid squad, the strongest defensive specialist in that central zone. With doubts still hanging over Eduardo Camavinga’s ability to anchor the midfield on a consistent basis, the Frenchman’s role grows even larger.
Last season scarred the club. Real Madrid suffered 54 injuries across the campaign, a staggering number that set off alarm bells at Valdebebas and forced a rethink on how players are handled. One of the first measures: stricter control of recovery timelines, with medical staff and coaching staff aligned on avoiding setbacks rather than chasing short-term fixes.
Tchouameni has become the prime example of that new policy. The plan, as things stand, is for him to begin getting minutes around the fifth matchday of La Liga, when Real Madrid face Rayo Vallecano on the weekend of 14 September. Not before, unless something changes dramatically.
From whistles to indispensable
The caution around him now is also a reflection of how far he has come in Madrid.
Tchouameni did not always enjoy this level of trust. His first seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu brought doubts, murmurs in the stands, even loud whistles from sections of the crowd. He looked physically short at times, mentally drained at others.
Last season changed that. He rebuilt himself, both in body and in mindset, until he became a player the supporters valued and his coaches leaned on. When Real Madrid needed control and protection in front of the back line, his name was the first on the board.
That is why this season carries a different weight for him. It is not about proving he belongs. It is about confirming his status.
Valverde tension and a new test
The end of last season was not smooth. His conflict with Federico Valverde added an uncomfortable layer to an already demanding campaign. Both players have since confirmed that the dispute is resolved, but questions linger.
They did not share minutes after the incident. That detail has not gone unnoticed around the club or among the fanbase. How will their on-pitch relationship look when they finally line up together again? Can two key pieces of Mourinho’s midfield puzzle click seamlessly after such a flashpoint?
Those answers will only come once Tchouameni is back and fully ready to compete. And that is the line Mourinho refuses to cross.
For now, Real Madrid wait. The coach holds his ground. The medical staff stick to their plan. The fifth matchday is the first realistic target, not an ultimatum.
Tchouameni’s season will not be defined by how quickly he returns, but by what he looks like once he does.
