Joao Cancelo's Awkward Night at Camp Nou

Joao Cancelo’s night at Camp Nou was supposed to be simple: a walk onto the pitch, a wave to the crowd, a fresh start. Instead, it turned into an awkward sideshow.

As Barcelona’s players were introduced one by one before the Joan Gamper Trophy fixture, Cancelo waited in the tunnel in full kit, the No. 2 shirt on his back. Cameras caught him looking tense, then visibly irritated. Moments later, he turned on his heel and disappeared down the corridor, leaving team-mates and staff glancing around in confusion.

The explanation arrived quickly from local media. According to Spanish journalist Victor Navarro, Barcelona had planned to present Cancelo with the rest of the squad, but hit a late administrative wall: his registration still wasn’t complete. Without that, the club could not officially put him in front of the Camp Nou crowd.

By that point, Cancelo’s situation with Al-Hilal was already resolved. Reports in Spain confirmed the Saudi Pro League side had agreed to terminate his contract, which was due to run until the end of the season. The deal was struck on the condition that the Portuguese defender waived the remaining money owed to him. The agreement freed him to join Barcelona, but the final paperwork for the move had not yet been processed.

That technicality made all the difference. On paper, at the moment of the presentation, Cancelo was still an Al-Hilal player. On the pitch, he was nowhere to be seen.

While Cancelo fumed in the background, another new signing owned the stage. Rodri, unveiled earlier this week after a £65 million move from Manchester City, drew the loudest roar of the night when his name was called. The Spanish midfielder, tied down on a four-year contract, arrived with serious weight behind his reputation, having been named the best player at the 2026 World Cup.

The Camp Nou crowd already know Cancelo well too. The 32-year-old spent the second half of last season and the 2023–24 campaign on loan in Catalonia, slotting in seamlessly and quickly becoming a popular figure. This time, he is set to return as Barcelona’s permanent No. 2 once the final signatures land where they need to.

For now, the defender waits. The club’s sporting plans move on, the start of the new Liga season looming, while officials work in the background to untangle the remaining registration issues.

Once the last document is filed and his transfer from Al-Hilal is finally stamped, Cancelo’s walk onto the Camp Nou turf will come. The only question is whether it will feel like the grand unveiling he expected, or the end of an off-field saga that already dragged on one night too long.
