Barcelona Confirms Bid for Julián Álvarez Amid Transfer Tensions

Barcelona have stepped out from behind the curtain in the Julián Álvarez saga – but only just.

Vice-president Rafael Yuste has confirmed that the club submitted an offer for the Atlético Madrid forward, while carefully refusing to fan the flames of an already delicate situation between two La Liga heavyweights.

Speaking to TV3 after Barça’s Joan Gamper Trophy outing, Yuste was pressed on the club’s pursuit of Álvarez, who has been strongly linked with a move to the Catalan side. Atlético, for their part, remain adamant: the Argentine is not for sale.

Reports in Spain have suggested Álvarez wants to leave Atlético, and Barcelona are weighing up attacking reinforcements as they reshape Hansi Flick’s squad. The ingredients for a transfer storm are all there. Yuste clearly has no intention of stirring it.

“We made an offer and that’s that”

The Barça vice-president refused to delve into specifics on Álvarez, repeatedly underlining that the striker is still under contract at Atlético and must be treated as such.

“I don’t like to talk about players who aren’t ours. We’ve had a very good relationship with Miguel Ángel Gil and President Cerezo for years and years, and so these are things that I would say are part and parcel of football.

“We must maintain decorum and let common sense prevail,” Yuste said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

His words left plenty of questions unanswered. He did not say whether Barcelona’s proposal remains on the table or if another move is being prepared. The only concrete admission came in a short, sharp line.

“We made an offer and that’s that. We must focus entirely on what Hansi said recently: that we have a match on Sunday and we have to go out and win it.

“There are 38 matches in La Liga and each one is worth three points, so we’re fully focused on trying to secure our first win,” he added.

The message was clear: yes, Barcelona have moved for Álvarez. No, they are not going to wage a public battle with Atlético over him.

Respect, relationships and a live market

Yuste repeatedly circled back to one theme – respect. Respect for contracts, respect for rivals, respect for long-standing institutional ties.

The Barcelona executive highlighted the “very good relationship” with Atlético’s hierarchy and made it plain that the club will not use the media to turn up the temperature on negotiations.

Behind that diplomatic tone, the market remains very much alive.

Yuste confirmed that Barcelona are still open for business before the window shuts. He praised the work of the sporting department, led by Deco, after the deal to sign Rodri, and name-checked Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría as key figures in the club’s recruitment drive.

“We have a great technical team, with Deco, Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría, who is also doing an exceptional job, and the transfer window is still open.”

The line hung there. No promises, no guarantees, but a clear hint: Barcelona are not done yet.

Whether that next move involves Julián Álvarez now depends on how far Atlético are willing to bend – and how hard Barça decide to push.
