JJ Gabriel Excluded from Manchester United Clash as Future Uncertain
JJ Gabriel will play no part in Manchester United’s Premier League 2 clash with Brentford at Leigh Sports Village on Friday night, as uncertainty around the teenage forward’s future at the club grows more acute.
The 15-year-old has been one of the brightest sparks in United’s youth ranks this season. He scored in both of United’s opening Premier League 2 fixtures, announcing himself with a composed lofted finish from 20 yards against Ipswich on 24 August, then following it up a week later with a sharp, slaloming run and finish inside the box in a 4-1 win over Leicester.
Those two goals did more than turn heads. Inside the club, they helped fuel a belief that Gabriel could be fast-tracked into the squad for United’s opening Champions League game against Azerbaijan champions Sabah. Michael Carrick was in the stands for his first strike, and senior United coaching staff watched the second at close quarters. The buzz around him was real.
Then came the first jolt. Gabriel was not named on United’s A list for the Champions League, the only route for a player under 16 to feature in the competition. United cruised to a 4-0 win over Sabah, and Carrick emptied his bench by the 72nd minute. Gabriel, watching on, was never in contention.
That decision is understood to have been one of the key flashpoints that pushed Gabriel towards the stance he has now taken, though tensions had been simmering even before that night.
The situation has escalated quickly. Gabriel is no longer training with United, and there is a clear split in expectations. Figures at Old Trafford remain hopeful that a resolution can be found and that the relationship can be repaired. Those close to Gabriel see it very differently and do not believe he will play for the club again.
To add another layer of uncertainty, Gabriel’s exact whereabouts are currently unclear. With England’s latest age-group squads due to be announced on Friday, it is thought highly unlikely that his name will appear on any of the lists.
For a 15-year-old who seemed to be racing through the levels only weeks ago, the rise has stalled abruptly. The next move now rests not with United’s coaches or selectors, but with a teenager whose future suddenly looks wide open.
