IUP Women's Soccer Draws 2-2 with Clarion Despite Dominance
INDIANA, Pa. – Indiana (Pa.) spent most of the afternoon camped in Clarion’s half. It still had to claw its way back just to escape with a point.
Behind a relentless attacking display and a brace from Kat Morgan, IUP women’s soccer drew 2-2 with Clarion on Saturday at South Campus Field, a result that will feel like dominance on paper and frustration on the scoreboard.
Morgan sets the tone, Clarion hits back
IUP came out sharp and on the front foot, and it didn’t take long for the pressure to tell. In the ninth minute, Morgan broke the deadlock, finishing off a move created by Melody Leiva’s service to hand the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The early goal hinted at a comfortable afternoon. Clarion quickly tore up that script.
Just six minutes later, the Golden Eagles struck back. In the 15th minute, Leah Deal found the equalizer, punishing one of Clarion’s rare forays forward. Suddenly, the match was level and IUP’s control of the ball meant nothing on the scoreboard.
Clarion then landed another blow before the break. In the 30th minute, Sofia Barba put the visitors in front, turning IUP’s bright start into a 2-1 deficit at halftime. The Crimson Hawks walked off trailing despite dictating the tempo.
One-way traffic after the break
The second half turned into a siege.
IUP pinned Clarion back and never really let them out. The Crimson Hawks outshot the Golden Eagles 8-0 over the final 45 minutes, finishing the day with a 14-3 advantage in total attempts and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Every corner kick belonged to IUP as well, 6-0.
Still, Clarion clung to its lead behind a busy performance from goalkeeper Sage Sherk, who finished with seven saves as wave after wave of Crimson Hawks attacks came at her back line.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 74th minute. Morgan, dangerous all afternoon, struck again, slotting home her second of the game to level it at 2-2. She made the most of her chances, scoring twice on four shots, all of them on target.
IUP kept pushing for a winner, but Clarion’s defense and Sherk’s positioning held firm to the final whistle.
Numbers tell the story, but not the result
Leiva, who set up the opener, capped her afternoon with three shots and the assist. Ayla Cook and Charlotte De Keukelaere each registered two attempts, while Zoe Ans-Bitchoka and Avery Clanton also tested Sherk as IUP piled on the pressure.
At the other end, junior goalkeeper Sarah Gatz went the full 90 minutes for the Crimson Hawks. Clarion managed only three shots all day and put just two on frame — both ended up in the back of the net.
The draw moves IUP to 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-2 in PSAC play, a record that hardly reflects the control they showed in this one. Clarion, now 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference, leaves with a point that felt hard-earned.
IUP leaves with a question: how long can a team dominate like this without turning it into wins?
