Inter without Calhanoglu for Udinese clash

Inter head into Monday night’s Serie A meeting with Udinese without one of their key pillars in midfield, as Cristian Chivu has left Hakan Calhanoglu out of the matchday squad due to muscular fatigue.

The Turkish playmaker, normally the metronome at the base of Inter’s midfield, is dealing with adductor fatigue, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio. The issue has been described as minor, but it is serious enough to rule him out of the San Siro fixture.

Calhanoglu’s absence lands on a busy Serie A Monday, with Inter vs. Udinese one of three games on the slate, alongside Torino vs. Roma and Como vs. Parma in the early evening.

Inter reshuffle without their regista

Chivu has been forced into a rethink. Without Calhanoglu anchoring the side, Inter will start with a midfield trio of Nicolo Barella, Piotr Zielinski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, with Zielinski expected to operate as the deepest of the three.

It is a significant tactical tweak. Calhanoglu’s range of passing and control of tempo have been central to Inter’s structure, and Zielinski will now be asked to guide the build-up from deep while Barella and Mkhitaryan push on between the lines.

Short-term concern, longer-term question

Inside the club, there is no alarm over a long lay-off. Calhanoglu will be monitored day by day, with staff confident the problem is manageable.

The immediate concern, though, is timing. Inter face Roma on Saturday evening in another key Serie A fixture, and as of now, Calhanoglu’s availability for that match remains uncertain.

For Chivu, Monday night becomes more than just a test against Udinese. It is a live examination of how Inter cope when their most reliable holding midfielder is watching from the stands.
