Idaho Edges Grand Canyon 1-0 in Close Match
MOSCOW, Idaho – One mistake, six minutes in, and Grand Canyon spent the rest of the night chasing a game it never truly laid a glove on.
Idaho edged a 1-0 win inside the turfed Kibbie Dome on Friday, handing the Lopes their first loss in three matches and snapping their Pacific Northwest road trip to a stuttering start.
One gift, one goal
Two teams that have shown they can score in a variety of ways produced just a single breakthrough. It came early, and it came gift-wrapped.
In the 6th minute, GCU goalkeeper Emma Knack mis-hit a clearance straight into the path of Idaho senior forward Calli Chiarelli. It was the kind of chance strikers replay in their heads the night before a match. Chiarelli pounced, took a couple of calm touches, and rolled her shot into an almost unguarded net for the only goal of the night.
From there, Idaho never needed a second invitation.
Lopes locked out
If the opening error rattled Grand Canyon, the stat sheet confirmed it. The Lopes failed to record a shot on goal for the rest of the match – just the second time that has happened under head coach Derek Cissell, a span that includes the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance at No. 3 USC.
Idaho’s back line and goalkeeper Paula Flores kept GCU at arm’s length, steering away half-chances and loose balls with minimal drama. Flores finished the night with her 22nd career shutout, another marker in a career built on clean sheets.
The Vandals improved to 5-1-1 and stretched their winning streak to three. They also claimed their first victory over Grand Canyon after falling to the Lopes in Phoenix last season, a result that clearly lingered.
Defense steadies, but not enough
For GCU, the opening lapse did not spiral into a collapse. After the early goal, the Lopes’ defense tightened, cutting out lanes and limiting Idaho to three more shots on frame, all handled by Knack.
They stayed in the match until the final whistle. They just never found a way into it at the other end.
Grand Canyon drops to 3-2-2, its three-match unbeaten run gone with one misplayed clearance and a night of attacking frustration.
Road ahead in the Northwest
There’s no time to dwell. On Sunday, the Lopes face Eastern Washington in Cheney, a side that had opened the season with five straight wins before a loss to Wyoming cooled their surge.
GCU will welcome a return to a grass surface and the chance to reset before a three-match homestand that spills into conference play. The question now is simple: was this a blip on turf, or the first warning sign in a crucial stretch of their season?
