Hibernian's Home Form Struggles: David Gray Stays Calm

Hibernian’s home form is sinking fast, but David Gray is refusing to panic.

Five straight Scottish Premiership defeats at Easter Road. No home league win since April. The last team they beat in Leith? Kilmarnock – 3-0, and coming back to town on Tuesday night under the lights.

Since that comfortable victory over the Ayrshire side, the numbers have turned ugly. Hibs have lost twice at home to Hearts, twice to Motherwell and once to Celtic. The scoreboard has been brutal, the mood around Easter Road increasingly tense.

Gray, though, is not buying into the idea of a crisis.

“Big chance here, two home games to get into this international break in a really strong position,” the head coach said, with Aberdeen also due in Edinburgh on Saturday after Kilmarnock’s visit.

He sees performances that the results don’t show. That’s his line and he’s sticking to it.

“There have been some really positive performances at home. It’s definitely in us,” he insisted, pushing back at the narrative that Hibs have gone soft on their own patch.

For Gray, the growing stack of unwanted statistics is just background noise.

“You can find a stat to drive whatever narrative you’re looking for,” he said. “I look at them all in isolation, in games. The only stat, the only thing that matters, is that score in the top corner of the screen when it’s on the telly.”

He knows, though, what every Hibs manager eventually learns: you do not get away with a fragile home record for long.

“For us to be successful, you need strong home form and we’ve got a chance, with back-to-back games, to try and put that right.”

Two matches. One restless stadium. A team desperate to flip that score in the top corner back in their favour.
