Hansi Flick Faces Selection Dilemma at Barcelona

Hansi Flick finally has a problem he’ll welcome – and one he can’t avoid.

For the first time this season, the Barcelona coach must leave out a fully fit player by choice, with 24 footballers available for the trip to Valencia and La Liga rules allowing only 23 to be registered.

Gavi and Gabriel Jesus are back in full training and ready to be involved, according to SPORT, turning what had been an injury crisis into a selection puzzle. The medical room has emptied, the training ground has filled up, and now someone has to pay the price for the squad’s new-found depth.

From shortage to surplus

The gradual return of key names has transformed the rhythm at Barcelona’s training sessions. Flick can now raise the intensity, rotate more, and design match plans with options in almost every position. What was once a thin group now looks like a proper, competitive squad.

But La Liga’s regulations are blunt. Only 23 players can make the official list for a matchday. Flick has 24 ready to go. One will stay behind.

Among those most at risk, SPORT points to Alejandro Balde and Brian Farinas.

Balde’s case takes a new twist

Balde has already felt the sting of omission once this season. On the opening day against Elche, Flick left him out for what he described as a purely technical decision, making it clear in a press conference that he did not believe the full-back was focused enough.

This time the context is very different.

Balde has been named in the last two La Liga squads, even if he has yet to play a single minute in the competition. His exclusion now would not be about attitude or concentration, but about numbers and hierarchy in a squad that suddenly has options.

That shift matters. It turns Balde from a disciplinary example into a victim of competition.

Farinas in the firing line too

Brian Farinas is also firmly in the equation. With Gavi back to strengthen midfield options and Gabriel Jesus available in attack, the squeeze tightens on the fringes of the squad.

Flick must now weigh every line of his team: how many defenders, how many midfielders, how many forwards he wants on the list, and where he can afford to be light. One decision, one name, and one player watching Valencia–Barcelona from home instead of the bench.

For the German coach, this is the first “problem” of its kind in his Barcelona tenure. For the players on the edge, it could be the moment that defines their role in the months ahead.
