Haaland Cleared to Start for Manchester City vs Arsenal
Erling Haaland has been cleared to start for Manchester City in Sunday’s Community Shield showdown with Arsenal, easing fears after a brief scare in training.
The Norwegian left the latter stages of Thursday’s open session early, sparking concern in the stands and on social media. Any anxiety didn’t last long. Enzo Maresca moved quickly on Friday to shut down talk of a problem with his main striker.
“He was ok, he had just a small thing behind ears, but he was ok,” the City manager said in his pre-match press conference, underlining that Haaland is available for selection in Cardiff.
Haaland fit – but not guaranteed to start
Haaland tormented Arsenal last season, scoring twice in three meetings, and his presence instantly changes the tone of any game between these two clubs. The twist this time is his preparation.
He did not feature at all during pre-season, having been handed an extended break after helping Norway reach the World Cup quarter-finals. The lack of minutes leaves Maresca with a decision: unleash him from the start, or hold him back as a devastating option from the bench.
The form of Omar Marmoush complicates that call. The forward staked a strong claim to lead the line by scoring twice in the 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid. Momentum is on his side. Haaland’s status is unquestioned, but match sharpness is not.
Midfield shake-up as Reijnders departs
Behind the front line, Maresca must reshuffle his midfield. Tijjani Reijnders is on the verge of completing a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah, with the deal expected to be finalised before City face Arsenal. That exit leaves a vacancy alongside Mateo Kovacic.
Rico Lewis is one solution. He started in midfield in the win over K-League Allstars and offers control and energy in tight spaces.
Then there is £116million summer signing Elliot Anderson. The England international could make his Manchester City debut in this fixture, but he has only just returned to training, along with Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki. That limited build-up may push Maresca towards the more ready Nico Gonzalez, who stands as a strong candidate to get the nod.
Rodri is back at the club after minor back surgery and remains a looming presence in any City midfield discussion. For now, though, he is still in the rehabilitation phase, and all signs point to this Arsenal clash arriving too soon for him to play any part.
Defensive battle for places
At the back, competition is just as fierce. Rayan Ait-Nouri has impressed across pre-season and is making a serious case to start at left-back. If he does, it would likely trigger a reshuffle in the centre, with Josko Gvardiol shifting inside to partner Ruben Dias at the heart of the defence.
For Maresca, the Community Shield is more than a curtain-raiser. It is an early test of his selections, his reshaped midfield, and how he balances Haaland’s fitness with Marmoush’s form. Against an Arsenal side desperate to land a psychological blow, he will discover quickly how many of these bold calls are ready for the real thing.
