The Nottingham Forest midfielder is set for a recall to the national team ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures, with BBC reporting he will replace Palmer in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the extended international break.

Palmer is expected to withdraw from the England set-up with a minor injury, a setback that lands just as his international career looked ready to restart.
The 24-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday, another reminder of how central he has become to the Blues. After a summer off following his omission from the World Cup squad, he has responded in style: six starts from seven league games, four goals, two assists. He has been Chelsea’s attacking reference point.
That is what makes this latest twist sting. Tuchel had brought Palmer back into the senior fold, keen to finally see club form translated onto the international stage after that controversial World Cup snub.
Before the injury concern emerged, Tuchel made it clear he wanted more than sentiment from the forward. Palmer, he said, had a “point to prove” and needed “to step up” to “keep his shirt and justify the nomination.” The message was blunt: the recall had to be earned, then defended.
Palmer has not played for England since a 1-0 friendly defeat to Japan in March. That wait will now drag on, with his ambitions parked again until his body allows him another shot.
Fitness has followed him like a shadow. A recurring groin problem disrupted his 2025-26 season, to the frustration of then Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca – now in charge at Manchester City – who publicly admitted the situation “did not make sense.” The questions around his durability are not going away.
Gibbs-White gets his chance
Palmer’s misfortune cracks the door open for someone else. Gibbs-White has been pushing at it for weeks.
Initially left out of Tuchel’s original squad, the Forest playmaker was, in the England manager’s own words on Friday, extremely close to making the final cut. Now he is in.
The 26-year-old has started the domestic campaign sharply, with one goal and two assists in five league games. His influence on Forest’s attacks has grown, and so has the noise around his England credentials.
This will be his first appearance in a Three Lions squad since October 2025, when he featured in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales. That outing felt like a first step. This recall, in a high-intensity Nations League window, feels more like a proper audition.
Gruelling schedule awaits Tuchel’s England
Gibbs-White joins an England group facing a punishing stretch of fixtures that will test both depth and resilience.
Tuchel’s side open by hosting World Cup winners Spain at Wembley on Saturday, 26 September – a marquee night under the arch and a stern examination of England’s technical and mental sharpness.
From there, the schedule tightens. England travel to face the Czech Republic on 29 September, then stay on the road for a clash with Croatia on 3 October. The break concludes back at Wembley, with the Czechs visiting again on 6 October.
Four games. Little recovery time. High stakes.
For Palmer, it is another chapter of frustration. For Gibbs-White, it is something very different: a rare window, in the middle of a brutal run, to prove he belongs in this England conversation for good.
