Morgan Gibbs-White to Join England Squad, Replacing Injured Cole Palmer
Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is set to return to the England squad as a replacement for Cole Palmer, who has withdrawn due to a minor injury. Palmer, who was recalled by manager Thomas Tuchel after missing out on the World Cup selection, will now miss the upcoming international fixtures.
Palmer’s Injury Forces Withdrawal
The 24-year-old Chelsea forward had been starting regularly this season, featuring in six of Chelsea’s seven matches and playing full 90 minutes in five games, scoring four goals and assisting twice. Despite his strong start, a recurring groin issue, which troubled him during the 2025-26 season, has forced him to step back. This injury was previously questioned by former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, now managing Manchester City.
England's Upcoming Fixtures
The England team will play four Nations League games during the international break. Their schedule includes hosting World Cup champions Spain at Wembley on 26 September, followed by away games against the Czech Republic on 29 September and Croatia on 3 October. The group stage concludes with a home game against the Czech Republic on 6 October.
Gibbs-White’s International Form
Gibbs-White missed out on the original squad selection but was close to inclusion, according to Tuchel. The 26-year-old last featured for England in October 2025 during a 3-0 friendly win over Wales. This season, he has contributed one goal and two assists in five league matches for Nottingham Forest.
Palmer and Tuchel’s Comments
Tuchel noted Palmer had "a point to prove" and needed to step up to justify his place in the team. Palmer's last England appearance came in a 1-0 friendly loss to Japan in March.
