Georgios Donis to Announce Saudi Arabia Squad for Gulf 27

Georgios Donis is set to lift the lid on his first major Saudi Arabia squad in just a matter of hours, with the Greek coach due to name his final list for Gulf 27 on Wednesday.

The Arabian Gulf Cup returns to Saudi soil in its 27th edition on 23 September, with Jeddah hosting the regional showpiece through to 6 October. For the "Green Falcons", it is more than a home tournament. It is a chance to end a 23-year wait.

Donis on the clock

Saudi TV channel Al-Ekhbariya confirmed that Donis will reveal his squad the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, exactly one week before the opening whistle of the competition. The timing leaves little room for hesitation. Once the list is out, the countdown truly begins.

The decisions, though, are anything but straightforward.

Salem Al-Dawsari, the team’s star and captain, is ruled out through injury, stripping Saudi Arabia of their most influential attacking figure and emotional leader. There is also a real possibility that right-back Saud Abdulhamid will miss the tournament, deepening the selection headache on the flanks.

So Donis must reshape not just a team sheet, but a hierarchy. Who carries the armband? Who steps into the creative void? Who locks down that right side if Abdulhamid cannot make it?

Chasing an old crown

Saudi Arabia enter Gulf 27 with a clear target: reclaim a trophy they have not lifted since 2003. For a powerhouse of Asian football, 23 years is an uncomfortable gap.

The draw has not offered any comfort either. The Green Falcons landed in Group One alongside Iraq, Oman and Kuwait — three teams with pedigree, pride and a history of making life difficult for anyone who underestimates them.
