Fernandes vs Haaland: Gameweek 2 Captaincy Decision
Erling Haaland (£15.5m) will, as usual, dominate the Fantasy Premier League armband conversation. But the numbers – and the fixtures – are screaming one name louder for Gameweek 2.

Manchester United’s captain hosts promoted Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday, a setting where he was the standout Fantasy performer in home matches last season. Haaland, by contrast, heads to Selhurst Park for the Friday night opener against Crystal Palace, a ground that feeds into a very different trend: his away record, while strong, doesn’t quite live with Fernandes’ home dominance.
Ownership power, points disappointment
Gameweek 1 was a reminder of the risk that comes with following the crowd.
Haaland was the default choice again, handed the armband by a huge 4.38 million managers. Fernandes, the next most popular, trailed far behind on 1.48 million captains. Ownership told a similar story: 67.9 per cent for Haaland, 48.5 per cent for Fernandes.
Both returned the same outcome: a flat two points. No goals, no assists, no bonus. Two blanks, millions of frustrated managers.
That stalemate sets up a far more open captaincy debate for Gameweek 2.
The home king v the away machine
Look at 2025/26 and the picture sharpens.
At Old Trafford, Fernandes was relentless. He delivered eight double-figure hauls in home matches last season – double Haaland’s tally of four on the road. When Fernandes played in front of his own fans, he rarely disappeared. He blanked in only three of 17 home appearances.
Haaland’s away record doesn’t collapse under scrutiny, but it does lose some shine. Across 18 away starts, he failed to return in seven. The underlying numbers tell the story clearly:
- Points per start: Fernandes (home) 7.3, Haaland (away) 6.6
- Blanks: Fernandes 3/17, Haaland 7/18
- Combined goals and assists in those splits: Fernandes 17, Haaland 16
- Double-digit hauls: Fernandes 8, Haaland 4
Ipswich at home, with Fernandes’ track record in that setting, is exactly the kind of fixture Fantasy managers look for when they want to break away from the template. Haaland’s trip to Palace will still attract the majority, but the data leans heavily towards the United playmaker.
The form alternatives: Odegaard, Palmer, Joao Pedro
While Haaland and Fernandes stumbled out of the blocks, three midfielders wasted no time in making their mark.
Martin Odegaard (£6.6m), Cole Palmer (£9.5m) and Joao Pedro (£7.6m) all opened the 2026/27 campaign with double-figure returns in Gameweek 1.
Odegaard was pushed into the most advanced central role behind Kai Havertz (£7.0m) for Arsenal and responded with a goal and 11 points against Coventry City. He now travels to an Aston Villa side reeling from a 4-0 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion. That kind of defensive collapse will tempt managers looking for a high-upside differential captain.
Palmer and Joao Pedro, meanwhile, carried Chelsea’s attacking threat in their first outing, each registering a goal and an assist away to Fulham. They now get Brighton at Stamford Bridge, mirroring Fernandes’ advantage in playing at home.
All three have form. All three have appealing roles. All three offer a way to dodge the Haaland bandwagon.
So who gets the armband?
Strip away the noise and one case is overwhelming.
Fernandes, at home to Ipswich, with his 2025/26 Old Trafford numbers, looks the standout alternative – and, on the evidence, the superior captaincy pick to Haaland in Gameweek 2.
Behind him, Odegaard and Palmer emerge as serious contenders. Odegaard edges it for third choice, his advanced role and Villa’s bruising opening defeat giving him the slight advantage over the Chelsea men.
Most managers will still gravitate to Haaland out of habit and fear. The question is whether Gameweek 2 is when the braver ones finally cash in on going against him.
