Fenerbahce's Champions League Challenge: Kartal's Strategy Match
Ismail Kartal stood in the bowels of Sukru Saracoglu Stadium and let the scale of it sink in. Eighteen years since Fenerbahce last walked into a Champions League campaign proper, three qualifying rounds survived, and now Roma on opening night.
“This is a strategy match,” he called it. It sounded less like a cliché and more like a warning.
Kartal’s historic return
Now into his fourth spell in charge, Kartal has written his name into club history again. By steering Fenerbahce through the qualifiers, he became only the second Turkish coach ever to lead the Istanbul giants into the Champions League phase.
He did not hide what it meant.
There was pride in his voice as he spoke about the journey, but no trace of surprise. He insisted he always believed this group could carry the weight of the club’s expectations and stand up to Europe’s elite. The achievement, in his mind, is a starting point, not a destination.
Respect for Roma, not fear
On Thursday, that elite comes in the shape of Roma. Perfect in Serie A so far: three games, three wins, momentum building.
Kartal did not try to play them down. Quite the opposite. He described this Roma side as the strongest in the club’s history, a formidable version of an already storied name.
“They have the strongest squad in their history,” he said, underlining the scale of the challenge. Yet he refused to let the conversation drift toward damage limitation or defensive survival.
Fenerbahce, he promised, will not simply drop deep and hope.
A plan to attack, not just endure
Kartal revealed that his technical staff have poured over every detail of Roma’s early-season form. The preparation, he suggested, has been exhaustive. The aim is not only to contain, but to control spells of the game, to press when the moment is right, and to carry a threat of their own.
“We will display a balanced game with plans for both attack and defence, rather than simply sitting back,” he explained.
The message was clear: Fenerbahce intend to belong at this level, not just visit it.
Asensio out, others challenged to step up
There was one setback in the team news. Spanish forward Marco Asensio remains sidelined through injury and will miss the clash. For a side that has leaned on his quality in key moments, his absence is significant.
Kartal did not dwell on it. He turned quickly to the players available, stressing his trust in the depth of the squad and their ability to rise to the occasion under the lights in Kadikoy. The stage, he suggested, is big enough for new heroes.
A call to the stands
If Thursday is a strategy match on the pitch, it is also a test of endurance in the stands. Kartal knows the noise and energy of Sukru Saracoglu can tilt tight European nights.

Opening points in the league phase are always precious. For a club returning after 18 long years, they could be symbolic too.
