FC Groningen Dominates PEC Zwolle with 3-0 Victory
FC Groningen did not just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They brushed them aside. A 3-0 win at a lively Euroborg pushed Dick Lukkien’s team up to sixth, while PEC slid into 16th and deeper into trouble.
PEC Zwolle came north carrying the scars of that brutal 0-7 hammering by Feyenoord. This was supposed to be the reaction. Instead, Groningen smelled vulnerability from the first whistle and never let go.
The hosts took command early, snapping into challenges and pinning PEC back. After 20 minutes, the pressure broke them.
Marco Rente spotted the gap and threaded a clever ball into Jorg Schreuders. The midfielder stayed cool, drew the defence, and cut the ball back perfectly for Thom van Bergen. One touch, a calm finish, and Groningen were in front: 1-0. Simple. Ruthless.
PEC wobbled, and Groningen went hunting for the second. It arrived with a gift.
Ryan Thomas lost the ball in a dangerous area, and Schreuders pounced. He stepped onto it, shifted onto his supposedly weaker left foot, and drove a low strike from outside the box. The shot flew in for 2-0, and Zwolle’s fragile confidence crumbled a little more.
The visitors offered almost nothing before the interval. Groningen controlled the tempo, moved the ball with authority and looked far more likely to score again than concede.
Only after the break did PEC Zwolle finally show any sort of threat. A low cross from the left flashed into the box and found Gabriël Reiziger, who managed to get a touch. For a moment, it looked like a lifeline. The ball slipped just wide.
That half-chance did not change the pattern. Groningen kept PEC at arm’s length, managing the game, waiting for the next opening rather than chasing chaos.
Second Half
On 68 minutes, they found it in style.
An indirect, rehearsed free-kick routine unfolded on the edge of the box. The ball was laid off to Tygo Land, who stepped in and hammered a fierce strike into the top corner. 3-0, and any doubt about the outcome disappeared with the ball into the net.
Groningen could have had more. Late on, Van Bergen almost grabbed his second of the night when the ball dropped kindly to him in the area. This time his left-footed effort lacked precision and drifted away, sparing PEC further damage on the scoreboard if not in the standings.
For FC Groningen, this was a statement of control and composure. For PEC Zwolle, still reeling from Feyenoord and now outclassed in Groningen, the question is no longer about one bad week. It is how quickly they can stop this slide before the season’s battle at the bottom hardens around them.
