Fariñas' Future at Barcelona Depends on De Jong's Recovery
Brian Fariñas was supposed to be on his way out before pre-season even began. Hansi Flick slammed that door shut.
The Barcelona coach blocked a move to Girona because he wanted to see the youngster up close. Not in clips. Not in reports. On the pitch, under pressure. Fariñas has taken that chance and stretched it as far as he can.
Now his future hangs on someone else’s knee.
Flick finds a wildcard in midfield
Fariñas has been one of the revelations of Flick’s early weeks in charge. The staff expected energy and enthusiasm from a La Masia midfielder. What they got was versatility, maturity and a player who looks comfortable wherever he is dropped.
He has operated as a defensive midfielder, as an interior, and higher up the pitch between the lines. At one point, Flick even pushed him to right-back against Birmingham. The experiment worked well enough to add another line to his profile: useful almost anywhere.
That adaptability has changed his status. Fariñas has gone from being a promising body in training to a genuine option for first-team minutes. Flick trusts him. That much is clear.

Barcelona have already ruled out sending him back to the reserve side. That path is closed. The choice now is stark: stay with Flick’s senior squad or revive the loan move to Girona that had been agreed before pre-season.
The deciding factor sits in the treatment room.
De Jong’s knee holds the key
Frenkie de Jong is the axis around which this whole decision turns.
The Dutch midfielder is recovering from a rupture of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, an injury suffered during the World Cup. He has opted for conservative treatment. No surgery for now, but the option remains on the table if progress stalls.
Barcelona are watching his recovery closely. Every scan, every step forward – or backward – could reshape their midfield plans.
If De Jong is ruled out for a longer spell, the logic is simple: Fariñas stays. With the reserve team off the table, keeping him around the first team would strengthen Flick’s options in a zone of the pitch where control and numbers matter.
If De Jong’s recovery accelerates and he returns sooner than feared, the picture changes. Minutes in a crowded midfield become harder to find. Girona, with a deal already lined up and a clear interest, would then look like the best route for Fariñas to play regularly at the highest level.
So the 21-year-old finds himself in a strange place for a young footballer. He has done almost everything right. He impressed the new coach. He showed he can adapt. He earned a place in the conversation.
Yet his next step will not be dictated by his own performances, or by how much Girona want him. It will depend on how quickly Frenkie de Jong’s knee can carry weight, twist, turn and sprint again.
For Fariñas, the breakthrough feels close. The question is whether it comes in Barcelona colours now, or after a detour through Girona.
