Erling Haaland will be available for Manchester City’s Community Shield meeting with Arsenal – and that is the line that cuts through everything else.
The alarm bells rang briefly on Thursday when the Norwegian stepped out of the latter stages of City’s open training session. Any fears of a setback were quickly dismissed by Enzo Maresca.
“He was ok, he had just a small thing, but he was ok,” the City head coach said, shutting down the story before it could grow legs.
Fitness, though, is only half the story.
Haaland Fit – But Does He Start?
Haaland has not played a minute of pre-season. His extended break after Norway’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals has left him fresh, but not battle-hardened. Being medically cleared is one thing; having the timing, sharpness and rhythm to lead the line from the first whistle is another.
City also have a very real alternative. Omar Marmoush has walked into this pre-season and made noise. His brace in the 3-1 friendly win over Atletico Madrid did exactly what he needed it to do: plant a serious question in his manager’s mind.
If Maresca wants intensity from the off at Wembley, Marmoush is the logical pick. He presses, he runs, he links. Haaland starting on the bench in mid-August would not be a drama. It would look like cold, sensible squad management at the start of a long campaign.
Behind the centre-forward, the picture is clearer. Phil Foden is expected to operate in the No 10 role, the creative hub between the lines. Out wide, Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku bring pace and direct running, the kind of threat that can rip open an Arsenal side still finding its own early-season groove.
Doku, fresh from signing a new contract, looks set to keep his place. He has earned it.
Midfield Puzzle Without Rodri
The real tactical headache lies deeper.
With Tijjani Reijnders closing on a move to Al Qadsiah, Maresca must decide who partners Mateo Kovacic in midfield. That vacancy shapes how bold or cautious City will look against Mikel Arteta’s side.
Rico Lewis offers energy and intelligence, capable of knitting play and shuttling into different zones. Elliot Anderson, the £116 million marquee arrival, is the statement option – the kind of pick that says City intend to set the tone for the season right now. Nico Gonzalez, by contrast, is the steady hand, the safer choice if Maresca wants control above all else.
The complication? Anderson, Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki have only just returned to training. Throwing any of them straight into a Wembley starting XI would carry obvious risk. Match rhythm is unforgiving at this level, and Arsenal will not be easing anyone back in.
Rodri’s situation underlines the dilemma. The midfield anchor is back at the club after minor back surgery but remains in rehabilitation, and this game comes too soon for him. Without his presence, City’s structure needs rebuilding on the fly.
Defence Taking Shape
At the back, the picture is starting to sharpen.
Rayan Ait-Nouri has put real pressure on for a start at left-back, his form strong enough to tempt Maresca into a reshuffle. If the Algerian gets the nod, Josko Gvardiol is likely to slide inside to partner Ruben Dias in central defence, adding mobility alongside City’s defensive leader.
Gianluigi Donnarumma is expected to start in goal, with Matheus Nunes likely to continue at right-back as Maresca leans into his flexible, possession-heavy structure.
Put it all together and the predicted XI reads: Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, Ait-Nouri; Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez; Semenyo, Foden, Doku; Marmoush.
Haaland will be there, waiting, ready. Whether he walks out from the start or steps into the spotlight later, Arsenal know exactly what kind of problem is lurking on that Manchester City bench.
