Eli Junior Kroupi Nominated for 2026 Ballon d'Or Young Talent Award

Joe Partington says Eli Junior Kroupi has finally been given the spotlight he deserves after the Bournemouth forward was shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d'Or Men's Young Talent of the Year award.

Kroupi, just 20 and currently sidelined with a broken foot, struck 13 goals in 35 games in all competitions last season, a breakout campaign that has now been recognised on the global stage.

Speaking on BBC Radio Solent's Cherries Unpicked podcast, former Bournemouth defender Partington could barely hide his amazement.

"It is just mad, isn't it?" he said. "We've had some exceptionally talented young players at this football club, but never one who has been involved in the Golden Boy award at the Ballon d'Or."

For Bournemouth, the nomination lands at a time when Kroupi’s absence is being felt every week. The team have lost their edge, Partington argued, without the young forward’s unpredictability.

"Eli Junior Kroupi did perform exceptionally well last season. Bournemouth really are missing him at the moment, there is a big hole in the team," he said. "They are missing him being a slight maverick, being a bit more creative and being able to take risks."

Right now, he sees a side playing within itself.

"Bournemouth feel a bit safe in their playing style at the moment, and he is a bums-off-seats kind of player," Partington added. "When he gets the ball in and around the box, people expect him to beat the goalkeeper or hit the target."

For Partington, the Ballon d'Or nod is not some token gesture. It is a marker of where Kroupi already stands among his peers.

"It is rightful recognition for him to be included in those top 10 best young players in the world," he said. "Will he win the award? I would say the likelihood is probably not, but it is great confirmation Bournemouth's recruitment team continue to hit the mark."

The challenge now is clear: heal, return, and prove this season was no one-off.

"Hopefully he is able to overcome this foot injury now and recapture the form that put him in this position in the first place," Partington said — and Bournemouth know their entire attacking rhythm might depend on it.
