Elanga Faces Injury Spell After Newcastle's Defeat
Newcastle United’s 4-1 defeat at Leeds United came with a sting that could last far longer than the scoreline. Anthony Elanga, one of Matthias Jaissle’s brightest early-season performers, was missing from the squad – and the news since has only deepened the concern on Tyneside.
The Swedish FA has confirmed that Elanga will sit out all of Sweden’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Romania and Poland because of the injury. Instead of joining up with his country, the winger will undergo another MRI scan next week as Newcastle try to pin down the full extent of the damage.
The statement from the Swedish FA underlined the scale of the absentee list.
“A number of names are missing and several are due to injuries,” it read. “Isak Hien, who was injured during the World Cup, is still not available. Anthony Elanga has suffered an injury in the past week and will therefore miss the meeting.”
For Newcastle, the timing could hardly be worse. Elanga will also miss Saturday’s home game against Hull City, and when Sweden’s two internationals are added in, he is already ruled out of at least four matches.
The fear inside the club is obvious: that this is only the start. If the MRI confirms a more serious problem, the lay-off could stretch well beyond the initial block of fixtures and rip a hole in Jaissle’s attacking plans.
Elanga had opened the campaign in exactly the kind of form Newcastle hoped for when they made him a key part of their frontline. He scored in each of the club’s first two Premier League matches, against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, offering direct running, end product and a reliable outlet on the right before the issue that kept him out at Elland Road.
Now Jaissle has a headache on that flank and a waiting game on the medical front. The scan will tell Newcastle how long they will be without a player who had quickly become a bona fide starter.
The question is simple and stark: if the news is bad, how do Newcastle replace that spark on the right wing for the weeks – or months – ahead?
