Dylan Lawlor Returns for Cardiff City Against Charlton Athletic
Cardiff City’s search for a first Championship win of the season has received a timely lift, with Wales defender Dylan Lawlor cleared to return against Charlton Athletic.
The 20-year-old, sidelined since the summer with a knee injury, is back in contention for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off at Cardiff City Stadium (12:30 BST). He has not played a minute of the 2026-27 campaign, but his head coach Brian Barry-Murphy says the wait is over.
“Dylan will definitely be available, he’s good to go,” Barry-Murphy confirmed.
Lawlor rejoined full training this week alongside fellow centre-back Will Fish. The former Manchester United defender will not be thrown straight back in, though, after hernia surgery.
“Will Fish won’t be available, he’s probably another week behind so we’re not going to take any chances, but Dylan’s back fully fit,” Barry-Murphy said.
Lawlor back after rapid rise – and brief halt
Lawlor’s absence has been keenly felt. The centre-back made 43 appearances for club and country in 2025-26, a breakout year that saw him surge from promising youngster to mainstay under Barry-Murphy in League One and into the Championship.
That progress stalled only because of the knee problem which also kept him out of Wales’ Nations League squad named on Tuesday. Now he is back in the frame, and his manager must decide how big a role he plays immediately against Charlton.
“He’s trained really well. We’ll see how he is today and tomorrow, then make a decision based on who we feel is best to start this game,” said Barry-Murphy, whose side have drawn four and lost three of their opening seven league fixtures.
“But he’s fully fit, with no issues with his knee whatsoever, and he looks great.”
Cardiff have been forced into constant reshuffles at the back during that winless start. The signing of Krystian Bielik from West Bromwich Albion has helped, but the Bluebirds have repeatedly asked full-backs Perry Ng and Joel Bagan to plug gaps in central defence.
With Gabriel Osho also missing matches through injury, the spine of Barry-Murphy’s side has rarely looked settled. Lawlor’s return and Fish’s looming comeback finally offer some stability.
“They’re two such outstanding players and to give us that extra depth to our squad that we’ve lacked in the earliest parts of the season is going to be really important,” Barry-Murphy said.
“I’m very pleased to get them back and will try to build them up gradually to make sure that they stay fit, and both players can be very important for us.”
Injury list easing – slowly
Not everyone is back yet. Cardiff remain without Wales internationals Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies, while defender Calum Chambers is also still sidelined.
Chambers is dealing with knee, neck and back problems, a combination that has left his return date unclear. Colwill and Davies are closer, working their way back from ankle and hamstring injuries respectively.
“We expect them to train in the middle of the international break, Rubin and Isaak,” Barry-Murphy said.
“Calum Chambers is having a further scan on his injury this afternoon, so we’ll know more on the timescale.”
Cardiff go into the Charlton game still hunting that first league win, but with their defensive core finally re-emerging. If the Bluebirds are to turn tight draws into victories, this could be the weekend the back line starts to look like Barry-Murphy’s team again.
