As the debate rumbles on about how many games modern elite footballers can realistically play, Arsenal’s midfield cornerstone has made his stance clear: give him 60 matches a season and he’ll take the lot.

Arsenal lived through a brutal schedule last season. A full 38-game Premier League campaign, a run to the Champions League final, a Carabao Cup final, and deep involvement on all fronts pushed their total beyond 60 fixtures. It was the kind of calendar that tests even the deepest squads.
Some players rotate. Rice rarely does.
Since arriving at Arsenal, the England international has become one of Mikel Arteta’s untouchables. When the fixtures pile up and legs get heavy, Rice is still there, anchoring the midfield, dragging himself through games if he has to. At times, that has meant playing through pain and taking injections just to be on the pitch for the biggest occasions.
That availability has turned him into one of the first names on the teamsheet, the kind of presence managers build a season around.
And when the domestic grind eases, his workload doesn’t. Rice remains a regular for England, adding international fixtures to an already swollen schedule.
“I’ve shown I can do it”
For Rice, this isn’t a new burden. It’s become his normal.
Speaking via Hayters, he pointed out that this level of output has followed him from his West Ham days, when the club were also juggling European commitments.
“For the last six seasons, even since my West Ham days when it was in Europe, I've played 60-plus every season.
“So I think it is sustainable because I've shown that I can do it. It's just about maintaining it, maintaining the level and the consistency of the performances.
“For me, that's the main thing, showing up every week, giving a good account of myself and helping the team win. I've been lucky enough to be able to do that. So I'm really hungry to be able to do that again this season.”
No caveats. No complaints about the calendar. Just a demand of himself to keep turning up and performing.
Arsenal’s relentless standard-bearer
The pressure at the top of the game is not easing. Arsenal expect another season crammed with high-stakes nights and quick turnarounds, and the calls for player protection will only grow louder as the matches stack up.
Rice, though, has nailed his colours to the mast. He wants to play. He expects to play. And he believes his body and mentality can handle another 60-game slog.
If he maintains that level of consistency and intensity, Arsenal’s midfield will again be built on one of the most reliable foundations in the league. The question now is not whether Declan Rice can live with the demands of the modern game.
It’s whether everyone around him can keep up.
