Cuca's Decision on Neymar for Palmeiras Match
Santos head coach Cuca has parked the Neymar question until the last possible moment, insisting he still has not decided whether his star forward will face Palmeiras on the controversial artificial turf at Allianz Parque.
Speaking about the squad’s condition and Neymar’s status ahead of a daunting away trip, Cuca made it clear nothing is settled yet.
"I don't have an answer to that yet, but tomorrow when we report back, we'll see how the whole squad is doing," he said, quoted by ESPN Brazil. "I'm going to talk to him tomorrow and with the entire squad so we can decide what to do."
The context is loaded. The match is huge. And the pitch is a problem.
Artificial turf, real tension
Neymar’s reluctance to step onto synthetic grass is no mystery. It goes back to an ankle sprain suffered against Atletico Mineiro, an injury that left him furious and outspoken. He didn’t dress it up on social media: "It's proven, synthetic is absolute s***."
That anger has not faded. The Allianz Parque surface remains a red line for him.
Cuca, though, has a team to pick and a favourite to challenge.
"The match against Palmeiras is going to be very tough; they are a very good side, and it's impossible to deny they are the favourites," he admitted. "But we'll work hard to do our best on Wednesday."
Santos need every edge they can find. Neymar is the biggest one they have. Yet his stance on the turf keeps the entire scenario hanging in the air.
Neymar keeps his distance
After Santos’ 2-1 Copa Sudamericana win over Macara, Neymar walked through the mixed zone with the decision still hanging over him. Reporters pushed the obvious question: would he play on the synthetic surface against Palmeiras?
He brushed it away.
"Man, are you already thinking about that? Calm down, there's a game on Sunday," he replied. "I don't know [if I'll play on synthetic turf]."
That uncertainty is not new. It fits with what he has already said about Allianz Parque.
"Playing at Allianz, for me, is impossible," Neymar stated previously. "Playing on a 7-a-side surface is something that bothers any player, regardless of injuries. Morumbi is very good, and I feel better there. I feel good on that pitch."
So the equation is stark. A marquee clash against Palmeiras. A pitch Neymar openly despises. A coach who wants to consult the dressing room before making the call.
By the time Santos board the bus for Allianz Parque, one question will define the night: does Neymar bend for the occasion, or does the turf win the argument again?
