Crystal Palace Prepares for Historic UEFA Europa League Match

Crystal Palace are set for a European night they have never known before – and Pierre Sage might just have two of his main weapons back in time for it.

The club’s first-ever UEFA Europa League match arrives on Thursday under the lights at Selhurst Park, with Polish champions Lech Poznan the visitors for the league phase opener. It is a landmark occasion, and Sage’s squad could be bolstered by the return of last season’s top scorer Ismaila Sarr and striker Eddie Nketiah.

Sarr has not kicked a competitive ball this season, his campaign stalled by injury just as Palace prepared for their European adventure. Nketiah, by contrast, began the season at full tilt, starting the first three fixtures before dropping out of the home games last week.

Now, just as the club steps onto the continental stage, both forwards are back in full training – and back in the manager’s thoughts.

“He could be in the team tomorrow, as [could] Eddie Nketiah, because they started to train with us this week, and they are in shape,” Sage said, offering the kind of update every Palace supporter wanted to hear.

Sage stressed that both players have pushed hard through their rehabilitation and looked sharp on the grass in recent sessions. For a side about to test itself in Europe for the first time, the timing could hardly be better.

Not everyone is ready, though. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson and striker Jean-Philippe Mateta remain out, with Sage targeting their return after the upcoming international break. Palace will have to navigate this historic night without them.

Off the pitch, though, Henderson delivered a significant lift. Just before Sage faced the media, the club announced their captain had signed a new long-term contract, tying him to Selhurst Park until 2030. It is a statement deal, locking in a key figure at a moment when the club is trying to grow beyond its traditional boundaries.

“We are really happy for us, we are really happy for him – it's a long-term contract for our captain,” Sage said, underlining Henderson’s influence not only between the posts but in the dressing room and around the training ground.

So Palace head into Thursday with a renewed core: their captain committed for the long haul, their leading scorer close to a return, and another centre-forward ready to rejoin the fight. The stage is new, the stakes are higher, and Selhurst Park will expect.

Now it comes down to whether Sarr and Nketiah can supply the ruthless touch that turns a historic night into a winning one.
