Cristhian Mosquera's Hamstring Issue Puts Arsenal on Alert

Cristhian Mosquera’s hamstring scare has put Arsenal on alert, but Mikel Arteta is resisting any sense of panic.

The defender came off during the win over Aston Villa last week, immediately reaching for the middle of his hamstring as he sat down on the turf. It looked worrying. Arteta tried to calm things in the aftermath, saying: “He is fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something.”

A few days later, the concern grew. Mosquera was nowhere to be seen in the squad for Sunday’s clash with Chelsea, his absence opening the door for Ezri Konsa to make his full debut in an Arsenal shirt.

Arteta, speaking after the Chelsea game, confirmed what many had suspected: Mosquera is dealing with a muscle issue.

“He had a muscular issue, and we think it’s not too much,” Arteta said. “But we need to wait and see the next few days for how it evolves.”

That wait now hangs over Arsenal’s week. With Napoli visiting on Wednesday, Mosquera’s involvement looks highly doubtful if the club need a few more days to assess the problem. A return for Saturday’s meeting with Sunderland feels like the more realistic target.

The immediate consolation for Arsenal came in the form of Konsa. Thrown in from the start against Chelsea, the defender delivered a composed, assured performance, highlighted by a thunderous, crowd-lifting challenge on former teammate Morgan Rogers. It was the sort of moment that announces a player to a new fanbase.

Konsa has only just come back from his holidays, so Arteta will be wary of asking too much, too soon. But if the medical staff clear him to go again on Wednesday, there will be little hesitation about his ability to handle the stage.

Mosquera’s hamstring may dictate the rotation for now. How long it shapes Arsenal’s back line could tell us plenty about the resilience of this squad in the weeks ahead.
