Coventry's Bobby Thomas Sees Hope in Narrow Loss to Manchester City

Coventry defender Bobby Thomas insists Saturday’s narrow defeat at Manchester City can be the launchpad for their season, describing the display as “a great starting point” for the Sky Blues.

Frank Lampard’s newly promoted side arrived at the Etihad without a point, having been beaten at Arsenal and at home by Hull City. They left still empty-handed, beaten 1-0, but with a performance that felt very different.

“We approached the game differently and had a better gameplan,” Thomas told BBC CWR. “We executed it really well and were unfortunate not to come away with a point.”

City dominated the ball, as they usually do, but Coventry’s structure held. The visitors were compact, aggressive and far more organised than in their opening two Premier League outings, something Thomas put down to a clear tactical tweak.

“You can see the formation change yourselves and we were more diligent in the roles everyone took on during the game,” he said. “We approached it a lot better.”

The league table is still brutal: three games, zero points. Thomas doesn’t hide from that, but he refuses to see this start as anything other than a platform.

“Three games, zero points is not great but this was a great starting point,” he said. “We can kick on and start getting some points from now. We’ve had Arsenal and Manchester City away, which has been a challenge, but we have to relish it and really take on these teams.”

That mindset, he says, has to define Coventry’s return to the top flight. No fear. No hiding.

“We can’t come to any places and be timid and not give 100%. We have to be all-in on everything we are doing.

“We need to get after it and start getting some points now.”

The performance at the champions has set the standard. The question is whether Coventry can now turn defiance into points.
