Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Man Utd Duo Likely to Withdraw from England Squad Amid Injury Concerns

Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer is expected to pull out of the upcoming England squad, dealing a setback to manager Thomas Tuchel. Despite Tuchel recently urging Palmer to justify his place after missing out on the World Cup squad, the 24-year-old appears set to prioritize managing his fitness over international appearances.

Reasons Behind Palmer’s Withdrawal

The Athletic reports that Palmer will withdraw from England duty to focus on load management. He played the full match during Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Brentford but now aims to preserve his physical condition by skipping the international fixtures.

Palmer is not the only notable player likely to miss out. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also expected to be doubtful for England’s Nations League matches following their draw with Fulham.

Injury Issues Affecting Rashford and Mainoo

Rashford continues to manage a hip problem that has troubled him since the World Cup, leading to his substitution in the 77th minute against Fulham. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Mainoo, who was part of the World Cup squad but didn’t feature in any games, faces injury concerns after playing 80 minutes at Craven Cottage.

Tuchel’s Expectations and Alonso’s Support

Tuchel has been clear about his expectations for Palmer, emphasizing the need for strong performances to maintain his place. He said,

"It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it is another thing to perform for England. Cole needs to step up when he comes and show these kinds of numbers to keep his shirt and justify the nomination."

Tuchel added that Palmer's recent return to form, with four goals and two assists in seven games, justified his selection. He also mentioned Trent Alexander-Arnold as another player with something to prove.

On the other hand, Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso supports Palmer’s cautious approach, stating,

"Sometimes you need to go through difficult moments with an injury or whatever to learn from that. Cole has gone through a difficult period with the injury and is now working hard to prevent recurring symptoms."

Palmer’s Injury Struggles and Form

Palmer’s decision to protect his fitness follows a challenging 2025-26 season disrupted by thigh and hamstring injuries. He made 34 appearances, including 24 starts in the Premier League, scoring 11 goals and assisting three times, but struggled to maintain consistent physical fitness.

His recent strong performances under Alonso have been promising, but skipping England duty reflects a plan to ensure long-term health. With only two goals in 14 senior international caps, Palmer still needs time to secure a regular spot in Tuchel’s lineup.

England Faces Tough Nations League Schedule Without Key Players

With Palmer, Rashford, and Mainoo likely absent, England faces a demanding run of four Nations League matches over three weeks. The schedule includes hosting World Cup champions Spain at Wembley on September 26, followed by away games against the Czech Republic in Prague on September 29 and Croatia on October 3.

The international window ends with a home match against the Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6. Tuchel will have to rely on alternative options to navigate this tough period and aim for positive outcomes.
