Colby Edges Bowdoin in NESCAC Opener with Second-Half Goal
Brunswick, Maine – One moment of precision was enough.
Colby opened its season with a 1-0 road win at Bowdoin on Friday night, riding a sharp second-half move and a dominant shot tally to claim the first points of the NESCAC campaign. The Mules move to 1-0-0 overall and in conference play, while the Polar Bears drop to 0-1-0.
Colby set the tone early
From the opening whistle, Colby dictated the rhythm. The Mules pressed high, kept the ball, and turned possession into chances, piling up a 15-1 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes.
Bowdoin bent but didn’t break. Senior goalkeeper Ilana Posner, making her first start for the Polar Bears, turned the opening half into a personal showcase. She produced five saves before the interval, cutting out crosses, parrying drives from distance, and keeping Bowdoin level despite the pressure.
The Polar Bears’ back line, under almost constant examination, scrambled well in front of her. Clearances were often hurried, but they were enough to send the game into halftime scoreless.
Breakthrough after the restart
The deadlock finally cracked in the 55th minute.
Colby’s Ella Caraluzzi surged down the left flank, carving out space and driving toward the box. Her low, centered ball found teammate Abagail Jarvi in stride, and Jarvi did the rest, steering her finish into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The goal jolted Bowdoin to life. The Polar Bears immediately pushed higher up the field, committing more numbers forward and pressing Colby’s back line in search of a quick reply. Attacks came more frequently, and the game suddenly tilted toward the Mules’ goal.
But Colby goalkeeper Sadie Gardner stood firm. Whatever Bowdoin managed to create in the final third, Gardner handled, preserving the narrow advantage.
Numbers tell the story
Colby’s attacking control showed clearly on the stat sheet. The Mules finished with a 10-2 edge in shots on goal, reflecting their sustained territorial dominance.
Posner, though, refused to let the scoreline get away from Bowdoin. She closed the night with a career-high nine saves, a standout performance in a losing effort and an early marker for her role this season.
Bowdoin did carve out some set-piece opportunities, winning the corner-kick battle 3-2, but couldn’t turn those moments into an equalizer.

Bowdoin now turns quickly to its next test, looking to turn improved second-half urgency into a full 90-minute performance. The Polar Bears host Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. at Pickard Field, aiming for a first win and a sharper cutting edge in front of goal.
