City Maintains Perfect Start with 1-0 Win Over Coventry
City’s perfect league start remains intact after a narrow 1-0 win over Coventry, and now the spotlight swings to Europe – and to Enzo Maresca’s first big rotation of the season.
Erling Haaland did what Erling Haaland does, settling the Coventry game with the decisive strike, but even the Norwegian goal machine is not immune to the manager’s plans. With City fighting on four fronts, Maresca has already warned that his No 9 will need breathers in the weeks ahead. In Portugal, though, Haaland is still expected to spearhead the attack at the Estadio Do Dragao.
Injuries force Maresca’s hand
The Coventry fixture brought more than just three points. It also delivered a couple of problems.
Nico O’Reilly was set to start but pulled up in the warm-up with a lower back issue, forcing a late reshuffle. Enzo Fernandez stepped in and took over the creative role from the off. Then Deadline Day signing Iliman Ndiaye limped off with a knock, adding his name to a treatment room that already included winger Jeremy Doku.
Those setbacks arrive just as Maresca had publicly committed to shaking things up in Europe. Speaking after the Coventry win, he underlined his intention to blood fresh faces in the Champions League: “We saw today with Ayyoub [Bouaddi], [Ryan] McAidoo, Iliman Ndiaye, they haven’t played in Champions League but they need to start, so on Tuesday they are going to start to get minutes in the Champions League.”
Young guns and new faces set for Porto
The big question is Ndiaye. His fitness remains the main doubt heading into the clash with Porto. He has been pictured in training, a strong hint he is ready to go, and if he gets the green light he is expected to start off the left.
That would trigger a reshuffle in the front line. Antoine Semenyo is likely to drop out, with Ryan McAidoo coming in on the opposite flank. Enzo Fernandez is in line to operate as the No 10, tasked with knitting together a much-changed attack behind Haaland.
Deeper in midfield, Ayyoub Bouaddi is set for a significant role. He is poised to sit alongside Elliot Anderson at the base of midfield, a youthful pairing asked to protect what should be an unchanged back four of Josko Gvardiol, Marc Guehi, Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov.
Matheus Nunes has been named in the travelling squad and could also see minutes, adding another technical option in the middle of the pitch as Maresca looks to manage workloads without losing control of games.
The rotation is coming whether City like it or not. The difference now is that it will happen under the glare of Champions League floodlights, with Haaland still expected to lead a side that looks fresher, younger and just a little more experimental in Porto.
