Chelsea Team News vs Brighton: Caicedo's Fitness and Starting XI

Chelsea walk into Sunday’s meeting with Brighton with one issue towering over the rest: Moises Caicedo. Everything in this game plan leans on whether their midfield anchor is ready to go at Stamford Bridge.

He picked up an injury in training last week and has already missed the wins over Fulham and Luton Town. Xabi Alonso wants him involved. The medical team are still holding the final word.

Alonso put it plainly: “He is hopefully training [on Friday]. We are hopeful he can be involved. We are still checking; no decision made.” There is optimism. There is also risk.

Caicedo’s fitness and the shape of Chelsea’s midfield

With Caicedo, Chelsea gain control, aggression and structure in the middle of the pitch. Without him, the options are still there, but the balance changes.

Reece James, Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia are all available and give Alonso different ways to solve the puzzle. Enzo Fernandez is another key name. He was expected in the squad against Luton, then left out, with interest from Manchester City swirling in the background. For Sunday, the noise around his future is secondary. The real question is simple: is he available, and will Alonso trust him from the start?

Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra remain out, which trims the list of midfield combinations. That is why Caicedo’s status carries so much weight. Chelsea can survive without him for a spell. They are simply a stronger, more convincing side with him in the XI.

Goalkeeper decision and defensive boost

The goalkeeper situation has stopped being subtle. Robert Sanchez is sliding down the pecking order after Chelsea agreed a £7.5million deal for Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa.

Mike Penders stepped in and made his debut in the 2-0 win over Luton, with Sanchez left on the bench. Alonso has already made up his mind for Brighton. He just is not sharing it yet.

At the back, there is a timely lift. Wesley Fofana returns from suspension and is in line for his first competitive appearance of the season, a major boost for a defence still finding rhythm. Young defender Josh Acheampong is also set to be involved in the squad.

Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda missed the Luton game, but Alonso moved quickly to calm any alarm. “Our plan is that they are training [Friday] preparing for Sunday,” he said. With Colwill, the staff are wary. Three games in a week, straight after an injury lay-off, is not the route they want. The priority is that he builds back at the right pace, on his terms, not forced.

Attack settled as Chelsea eye Brighton

Up front, the picture looks clearer. Cole Palmer played the full 90 minutes on Thursday and there is no suggestion he will be wrapped in cotton wool. He is expected to continue as a central figure in attack, with Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro alongside him as Chelsea try to sharpen a new-look front line.

The predicted XI, in a 3-4-2-1, shapes up as: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Acheampong; Gusto, Caicedo, James, Chavarria; Palmer, Rogers; Joao Pedro.

Caicedo and Fernandez remain the big doubts. Palestra and Henderson are out. Kick-off is 2pm BST on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Stamford Bridge.

For Chelsea, the checklist is brutally clear: get Caicedo on the pitch, nail the goalkeeper call, and win the fight in midfield. The rest of the season may hinge on how often they manage to do all three.
