Chelsea's Moisés Caicedo Fitness Update Before Derby

Chelsea will leave it late on Moisés Caicedo’s fitness, with a final call on the midfielder not expected until Saturday, just 24 hours before they face the Premier League champions.

The 24-year-old’s season has barely started and already feels stop–start. He missed the opening-day win over Fulham, then sat out the Carabao Cup victory against Luton Town. When he did finally get on the pitch, as a 68th-minute substitute in Sunday’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, his night lasted only 14 minutes before he went down and needed treatment.

He walked off under his own steam, but the fact this problem has flared again has set alarm bells ringing at Cobham.

Alonso treads carefully on key lieutenant

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Alonso chose his words carefully. Caicedo may only be 24, but he is already one of the pillars of this Chelsea side: vice-captain behind Reece James, 149 appearances since arriving from Brighton in August 2023, and central to last season’s campaign despite a disappointing 10th-place finish.

“We will check tomorrow, tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,” Alonso told reporters, refusing to be drawn into guarantees. He called for calm while the medical team continue their work, adding: “We [need to] not worry, we need to check tomorrow and take the final decision.”

The message was clear. No risks, not even for a derby with both teams perfect and the champions in town.

New-look midfield faces early test

Chelsea’s midfield has already been ripped up and reassembled once this summer. Enzo Fernandez’s move to Manchester City forced the club back into the market, and the response was decisive: the arrival of highly rated Valentin Barco and seasoned campaigner Jordan Henderson.

Alonso is convinced that mix can carry Chelsea through even if Caicedo is ruled out.

“[We have] different qualities, personalities,” he said as he ran through his options. “Valentin’s young, but he has come with great energy. We have Hendo, he has the composure, the mentality, he knows what’s going on in the games. He’s getting closer, closer to playing time.”

Energy from Barco, control from Henderson. On paper, it’s a blend that can absorb a setback. On the pitch, against the champions, it would be an immediate examination of Chelsea’s rebuild.

Derby on a knife-edge

Both London clubs step into Sunday’s derby with perfect league records and very different paths to get there. Arsenal have handled Coventry City and Aston Villa. Chelsea have edged past Fulham and then come through that seven-goal thriller against Brighton.

If Caicedo doesn’t pass his fitness test, Alonso is already lining up alternatives. The system, he insists, will not change just because one name is missing.

“We have Rom (Romeo Lavia), Reece (James) as well, Malo (Gusto) – he can play [in midfield],” the manager said, underlining the tactical flexibility he believes runs through this squad.

Chelsea’s spine is still being rebuilt in real time. Whether Caicedo stands at the heart of it on Sunday, or watches from the sidelines, will say plenty about how much strain this new structure can take so early in the season.
